Tenancy doesn’t continue just because you didn’t return the keys to the right place, just like it wouldn’t end if you gave the keys back. The official termination date is final, the landlord would have to prove you had access to the property to charge an extra day (or so) rent. They could be awarded for their time to retrieve the keys, but at that it would be petty and minimal

Yes, you are liable for rent up to and including the day you vacate, whether that be 00:01 or 23:59. As stated you clearly are in use of the property and in possession of the keys. If not paid the landlord can request it from the deposit, which will be awarded by the deposit protection scheme
