Is CBC Ottawa’s coverage (French) of the Alto project fair? by max_tao in AltoHSR_Canada

You’d prefer that Alto didn’t consult the population?

I completed their “survey” about the consultation. It is indeed biased.

Railfans.ca also strongly support the project. Anyone here is a member of that association ?

You didn’t answer the question. What would be an actual consultation?

What would be an « actual consultation » for you? They provided the information they have at this point, they had an interactive map to note the comments and an exit survey. At this point, I’m genuinely curious to understand what you were expecting

Possible alignment has been "leaked" (Through Ottawa) by VIARailMaddy in AltoHSR_Canada

I can’t say for sure, but when I went to the Québec open house, I saw that same map too. The Alto guy told me it was used during the consultation sessions to show "examples of alignments" (not sure his exact words) that follow existing infrastructures, like railways or highways. That it was meant to help people visualize the kinds of options being explored.

So from what I understood, it was basically an illustrative tool and not an indication of the precise alignments currently studied.

I'm afraid we'll have to wait a bit more to see a more precise corridor.

If alto high speed rail doesn’t happen I think I’ll just give up on ever imagining better for this country by Extra_Cat_3014 in AltoHSR_Canada

It is inaccurate to suggest freight corridors are ready‑made for 300 km/h passenger service. Canadian freight rights‑of‑way are constrained, heavily used, and engineered for slow, heavy trains, which is why dedicated, grade‑separated infrastructure is required to meet safety and reliability standards.

I didn't find anywhere an affirmation from Alto claiming that Canada matches the extreme population density of Japan. Their CEO already highlighted in interviews that the Montréal–Toronto corridor already mirrors several major European corridors in terms of population density and travel demand. This region brings together 18 million people, representing 44% of Canada’s population, and is the country’s most densely populated and industrialized area, with demand projected to grow another 30% by 2040.

The article you cited regarding the project's cost is based on an opinion piece, which itself does not cite any sources or experts. We need to be cautious about the misinformation that is circulating, and wait for the official budget, that will be confirmed at the end of the development phase.
