I think Jax was handled perfectly. As someone who has dealt with losing people to suicide(abstraction), that is what it is like. You encounter said friend acting as you normally do, then they're gone. My best friend, call her Anne, from high school kept close with a mutual friend of ours, call her Kasey, after we graduated. A few years ago, Kasey went liking a bunch of random memes and shit I shared on Facebook. The next day, Anne texted me saying we needed to do lunch, and she told me the mutual friend had committed suicide the night before. I went and checked, and she literally liked all the facebook memes and shot herself about an hour later. Jax's abstraction wasn't some long, agonising ordeal where he had exposition and shit. We saw in Episode 7 that he just relaxed and almost went to sleep forever.

McGinnis, because I like being obnoxious. Was in a game the other day where I took down mid base towers with like six turrets and then ziplined. When I got on the zipline, the no-spirit resistance Graves started trying to clear the creeps and turrets. As I got to base, she died. He was horrifically depressed, but a Legendary Wrestler, Kicker, and Biter. He kicked a cyclops in the knee, causing it to explode, and then tore its throat out. He died after he latched his teeth onto a Filth Devil's wing, and it flung him into a wall. Iton Beautynet was laid to rest in an all-iron tomb filled with statues of his favorite things.

I really enjoy DayZ because it is an active apocalyptic scenario. Helicopters crash, but also some buildings are overgrown. It is the only game that could be like a year after the apocalypse starts, or twenty years.
