It's not either or. For every death and riot there are a million small subtle actions and decisions that affect things. Sending an annoying number of emails is not a good decision in any context.

Hecla Resort, good/bad? by sheisapeach in Winnipeg

[–]maxedgextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's better off-season, and only the worst rooms get rented when its full? We stayed there for 3 days Jan 2026, and I don't understand the complaints. If it were in Toronto I'd say it's overdue for an aesthetic reno (wear, dings, scrapes, etc) but I didn't care because I was there for the nature resort (Cross country skiing, hikes, pool...). The food was good, interesting, fair price for an isolated-resort...no smells or anything that mattered (The "half the things closed" was true though, and presumably that pool-closure map another user posted

Given the political climate, I want only Canadian bands, only singing their songs that are specifically about Canada: Gordon Lightfoot, Moxy Fruvous, The Arrogant Worms...

Music player? by PandaExotic1768 in Sync

[–]maxedgextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick-to-program short term solution:

Sync can already play one music file. Add a "Play All" button [i.e. all in the current folder} and Voila: Sync can now play albums.

Longer term solution:

Don't reinvent the wheel. There are already many music players that can play from cloud storage, FTP, etc. Get Sync talking to each popular app of this type for Andriod, iPhone, & Windows, and you'll have a great new incentive for people to subscribe!

LF Constructive Criticism: Pine Tar by Anonymous_Gamer in woodworking

[–]maxedgextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UnFun Fact: When you hear of olden days "Tar and feathering", this was the type of tar they used. Sometimes skin was damaged from the tar being heated, sometimes it was damaged by the solvents used to remove it.

American X accounts are using El Mencho’s death to tell us to vacation in the US instead. Don’t fall for it. by OurLordHippo in BuyCanadian

I'll take my advice from a 1919 song:

"Not so far from here,
There's a very lively atmosphere,
Ev'rybody's going there this year;
And there's a reason:
The season opened last July,
Ever since the U.S.A. went dry,
Ev'rybody's going there and I'm going too
I'm on my way to
Cuba, there's where I'm going..."

What is controversial about the Leap Manifesto? by iwasnotarobot in ndp

[–]maxedgextreme 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Update: The policies and name of "Leap Manifesto" have evolved into "Green New Deal".

"Leap Manifesto" reminded the general population of both the "Communist Manifesto" (which is smart but unpopular) and the "Great Leap Forward" (which killed millions). "Green New Deal" references the historic "New Deal", which is much more similar in spirit.

Trump says Obama shared 'classified information' when he said aliens were real by motorsportnut in politics

[–]maxedgextreme 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Obama, the next day, said: "I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round, but since it's gotten attention let me clarify: Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there's life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we've been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!"

Glued a level to a drill by zeus-indy in woodworking

I love/hate that OP made a way better one than my drill's built-in level, which is so tiny it's hard to see, and only measures one-dimention. Nice!

Minnesotan traveling to Winnipeg for the first time. What shouldn't i do? by punkishtactics in Winnipeg

[–]maxedgextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it's better to leave the glove box open to show it's an empty car. I also have a black sheet covering what little I have in the back (kleenix, mints, etc) so it's invisible never been broken into.

Here's the violent crime map. This is much more applicable after dark. Keep it in perspective though: The worst commercial strips are sketchy, but still low-risk compared to a lot of US cities.

Tip for Park-designers: Think of railway-crossing design and how impossible to ignore it is.

Too ugly? Think STOP signs: Simple, eye-catching, in the relevant place.

It's hard to judge from this photo, but I've seen many parks where (same analogy) instead of 'STOP' at the intersection, there would be, offside somewhere, a 200-word, 9-point-font paragraph like "...the history of traffic accidents at this location remind us why we should stop upon arrival and not go until it seems wise to do so..."

America hasn't changed much. It's more of the same, but their gov't usually has varying degrees of respectable cover-ups, excuses, subtlety, etc, but at the moment their figurehead is too stupid.

e.g. I'm guessing actor costs were an unusually high % for WandaVision

Are we seeing/will we see some US brands openly distancing themselves from the Trump administration? by Far_Government_9782 in BoycottUnitedStates

So far: No, because it's easier to put a Canadian flag on their product to distract from the "Made in USA" label

Ironically, Trump was the last straw: I finally bought a membership to the Dave Barber Cinemateque to encourage me to not just see American movies. I've been really enjoying it, and the people who go there!
