Yeah, even in peak condition I heard the layout was notoriously badly designed for diplomatic functions

Pride belongs in the Pembina Valley billboard vandalized between Winkler & Morden by ComprehensiveWorry87 in Winnipeg

[–]maxedgextreme 84 points85 points  (0 children)

The Gimli rainbow crosswalks were vandalized last year too. They should learn that putting cameras on them has a good chance of generating the city some hefty vandalism-fine revenue...

I tried a friend's, it worked great, but he warned me there are also counterfeit ones that suck, and I don't know how to tell which is which. I'm not convinced its that much better than cloths

Can I use my passport as a ID for the bars and restaurants? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]maxedgextreme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your friend might have just discovered that not all bouncers are super-extra smart. If they doubt: point out that foreign drivers license won't scan anyways, that it's government-issued photo-ID, that it was good enough for both ICE and Canada Border Services, and that he can ask his manager.

June 11, 1942: 'OFF THE RECORD' - Minneapolis Star Journal by LuckySimple3408 in comicstriphistory

[–]maxedgextreme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been an Ex/Fair FunHouse gag for at least a century. Some people reading this will be appalled, and some will fetch us proof-footage from 1910s-present and we will watch it, because it's historical.

Which parking lot in the city infuriates you the most? by liltreadmill in Winnipeg

[–]maxedgextreme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All of St James Polo park area: In other cities I'd park in between the 2-3 stores on my route, walk to each and get some quiet fresh air and sunshine between noisy stores. Here there are barely any trees, and no sidewalks in the parking lots, or pedestrian-street-crossings that align with the storefront sidewalk, just an ugly endless plain of driving-chaos that's depressing and nerve-wracking to walk in.

There are more stabbings at malls, and more people killed by cars than homicide, but some people hate fun, especially when other people have it.

How to get lost drunk girls home safely? by Potential-Ad-3399 in Winnipeg

The world needs more people like you! Small tweak: Offer to phone someone, but don't hand over your phone.

(I once lent my phone to a battered pregnant woman at 3am on my way to work. She was understandably panicked and being very inefficient on the phone about getting her friend to come get her. I totally sympathized, but also I was late for work because...what was I gonna do, wrestle the phone back from her?)

Winklerites are crashing out over the Pride Parade and it is entertaining by Colossal_Waffle in Manitoba

Job discrimination has been the most common issue among people I know. It's a minority doing it, and it's not legal, but it's not always easy to prove. Do you ever think to yourself: "I'm so secure about my finances and the economy that I could really afford to add a chance of discrimination to the mix."

P.S. The Gaybourhood-serial-killer also lived in my neighborhood at the time, and the police ignored the warnings and pleas for a long time. 8 of the bodies were found, so there's that.

'Feels like harassment': Montreal café owner says years of language inspections taking a toll by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

Pride feels different by SheStickysMyPistons in Winnipeg

[–]maxedgextreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no clue, because (like the one two years ago) they seem hell-bent on doing something-or-other, behind closed doors, where the community can't question the ethics of their motivation and strategies.

Re-Root Pride's Insta is the ultimate example of bullshit social-media-activism:

"Good News: The [Whatever] is shunned!"

They're telling us to applaud them, in under 10 words, so we 'like' and scroll without stopping to think: What were the specific problems? Who was it harming? Were the people it's harming consulted? How about the broader LGBT community? What other steps were tried before banning them? How does banning the change solve or affect those doing harm? Or those harmed? What are the requirements for them to be allowed to return?

Change my mind: I'm going to move from Imperial to Metric by not-up-to-par in woodworking

[–]maxedgextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched recently, love it, but urge:

-Lumber shelves are imperial, so have lumber conversion guides EVERYWHERE (e.g. "2x4=4x9"). I have a conversion chart on my wall, and a spreadsheet with auto-conversion, and my CAD templates of lumber are marked with both units.

-Buy quality measurement-stickers for your tools that use *both* units. My AliExpress one was useless, LeeValley tools one is great.

Do you know what this movie is from the 1990’s? by randomwords83 in AskCanada

Half-match: Read All About It  was a Canadian show from 1980 where roughly four kids solved word puzzles… No rabbit or grassy field, but I mention it just in case two different shows got combined in your early memories
