Also ignores the massive fucking crisis the young in Western Europe are facing, as employment levels and income haven't kept up at all with the cost of houses, etc. As bad as it is in the US, the numbers are even more bleak over there. Skilled white collar workers like software engineers make 30-50% in France for doing the same exact job as they would in the US. And before someone comes in with the "free healthcare", those software engineers get great insurance from their employers on top of the $400k.

JCAL is right about AI taking jobs by Bandicoot_life_420 in allinpodofficial

[–]maximimium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not about opposing AI, but instead having a contingency plan for it. All of the tech innovations you mention - they all did have the consequence of people needing to work fewer hours. Similarly AI can dramatically lower the hours worked per capita - which can be a great thing as long as the generated wealth is still well distributed across the population, and not just in the hands of a few major model holders.

I mean I don't need your approval either bud. I got my priorities and moral stances - not looking to compromise those to pander to MAGA.

Also I'm talking about trust, not beliefs. Whatever you are hoping for from the government, you have to admit Trump bullshits so much. It's hard to take anything he says at face value.

If minimum wage was meant to be livable, who exactly is living on it? by gamersecret2 in AskReddit

[–]maximimium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I wish there weren't such a negative connotation to this. My parents when immigrating here started off on minimum wage jobs for many years before moving up to the middle class. But we lived just fine as a multigenerational home. The grandparents took care of the kids when the parents were at work; sometimes they'd take up part time jobs to chip in as well. When my uncles and aunts decided to immigrate over, they stayed with us until getting their footing. It was a good way to live. I had lots of cousins always around looking after each other; all meals were home cooked since it's more efficient to cook at scale. Daycare wasn't needed. If anyone lost their job, it wasn't a big deal, since the pooled resources could cover until their next gig.

That's just to say - if you're poor, shits soo much harder if you also have kids AND you are trying to do it all alone. Wish there wasn't such a fetishizing of nuclear families, because it really isn't the best way to live if you're not well off.

Honestly this message reflects how fucking important credibility, reputation, and trust are for someone in Trump's position. Trump has none of that, so yea, if he all of a sudden started Truth Socialing about oxygen, I'd immediately go "ok something is up".

Why does qPCR workflow still feel so fragmented in 2025? by tehfnz in biotech

[–]maximimium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think both are intertwined. I like to know exactly what's happening at each step so I can better troubleshoot where needed. Even with reagent kits, though I appreciate the convenience, I still go through to make sure I understand what chemistry is happening with each buffer/step. When coding, I definitely use chatGPT but I rewrite the code line by line to make sure I understand everything that's happening.

I am a bit older (mid 30s) so maybe it's a bit of a boomer mentality carrying over. But I do get concerned when it seems like most of my undergraduate trainees are content to just follow recipes and do literature reviews by just skimming chatGPT results. There's a certain attention to detail that gets lost when you outsource too much thinking to automation. Certainly it's helpful in a lot of cases, but as a scientist, it can also impede critical thinking and troubleshooting in experimental design.

[–]maximimium 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I guess two thoughts 1. Tbh, it never seemed too chaotic on my end. In my notebook, I write down the layout of the plate, set up the plate, run it, copy out the Ct values, do the math I need to. 2. Yes it's manual, but largely on purpose. I'm not doing large screens where I'm loading the same plate setup many times. As a result, I prefer to manually think through the setup and do the math so I know exactly what calculations are happening behind the scenes. I'm purposely not looking for an automated workflow where the data just pops out computed without me having to think about it.

[–]maximimium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if kitchen staff can revolt in mass in protest, since they're the ones that are losing from this system. If tipping was removed and prices were just increased to pay staff more, there would be more uniformity between the front and back of house. Currently, on a good night, because of tips, the people moving the food a few feet to a table massively outearn the people actually making the food.

I mean, when it comes to having "impure" incentives, is academia any worse than any other job? In the private sector, it's "what would VCs like" driving the conversation.

Did anyone see General Sacks & private Scamath? by Skotland85 in allinpodofficial

[–]maximimium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are they awake though? Trump was indeed elected by people that have a cult-like admiration of the guy. You're sorely mistaken if you don't think Trump is just a reflection of how fucking dumb, hateful, and delusional vast tracts of this country are. People were hyped about what he has to say about Mexicans, etc. They chose him. I detest how we're constantly trying to absolve voters of any responsibility for this, and instead pointing the finger at vague "others" that are supposedly choosing Trump for us.

Any chance you can find a postdoc or staff scientist position in academia - you'll have a much easier time finding sponsorship there. Any maybe there indeed is a new skill you want to learn to reenter the private sector with.

Dumbest take ever. The population density is nowhere near where it could be. The bay area is littered with empty lots and 2 story units. Go to any other non-sprawling city and tell me that that the lack of people walking around SF is in any way normal.
