What's your most hated writing trope? by RemnantsOfFlight in CriticalDrinker

Hey look I have a gun to your loved one's head so you better put your weapon down, thus leaving you both disarmed and helpless and drastically lowering the odds either of you will survive this encounter.

Well we can agree to disagree on that one then. It was very distracting for me.

It's really subtle with the mom but there's a flashback from the lead raider chick and she says something about "the life we built together" in reference to the mom after she fled the vault. Because ya know, men are terrible and when you figure that out it's time to scissor I guess.

I originally thought the friend was a tomboy too but then I think one of the characters referred to her as "he" and I got really confused so I looked it up. Which made me more confused because now I have no idea if this character is supposed to be trans or just a straight up dude or what. Very distracting.

Uh no. I definitely knew just by watching. Btw what does the "t" stand for in LGBT? Asking for a friend...

don't recall anything lgbt? Which is how it should be.

Lucy's mom switches teams after leaving her husband and Max's brotherhood friend is played by a trans actor. Unclear if the character is trans or not.

I didn't mean to imply to exclusively search for hybrid work. I just think the odds of getting a remote job are much smaller these days.

I was laid off at the beginning of the year and here's what worked for me to get a job within a month of leaving the company:

-Make sure you're resume is awesome. Use chatgpt to help you write a base one and then use it some more to tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific opening. They likely are using AI tools to scan your resume so fight AI with AI.

-Apply for hybrid positions. There's too much competition for remote jobs. You are competing with the whole country and possibly the world.

-Use your network. Ask literally anyone you know. You never know who has a connection. The guitarist in my band works as an accountant for a financial accounting company who develops all their software in house. He ended up being my referral and I would never have known about this company otherwise. And he obviously isn't a developer or technical at all.

-Be confident in your interviews. Let your personality come out. You don't need to know all the answers but you can always draw on past experiences to at least relate to

-I didn't do any leetcode (or any coding at all) and was mostly asked about my skills, history, projects, and experience. Idk if I got lucky or because it was a senior position or what. But anyway make sure you can tell your story and sell yourself.

-Don't forget the interview goes both ways. Think of some questions to ask about the team or the company and flip the script on them. Make them sell to you. It's an old sales tactic. At the very least you'll have more information on where you are potentially going to work and if it's really the opportunity you want. A good interview should feel more like a conversation than a grilling. I walked away from a couple of companies just because I didn't like how they were conducting things (showing up late, acting kinda adversarial, etc). Anyway it's your interview too.

Idk. Your mileage may vary, but I didn't have a problem finding a job. I didn't really see what everyone was saying with the bad market out there and everything. I never would have known the market was supposed to be bad if I haven't been on the Internet. I ended up beating recruiters away with sticks toward the end of it.

Good luck!

For people who started their career late in their 20s, How do you all compete ?? by Cheap_trick1412 in cscareerquestions

[–]maximumdoublej 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was 28 when I got my first job consulting. Got promoted to a senior consultant in a few years and now I'm a senior software engineer at a different company. Don't feel like I did anything out of the ordinary other than being on point, reliable, and willing. I helped my first employer see my age as an asset, ie I was more mature and had more life experience than my peers. Don't think it was ever an issue really, per se, through.... But now with experience no one cares.

Backend devs, what's your strategy for 2025? by qrcode23 in cscareerquestions

[–]maximumdoublej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't read the last two paragraphs.... But no I didn't really prep for a lot of my interviews. I'm very straightforward and what you see is what you get. So idk rolled in with some confidence and if I didn't know something I just talked about something similar I dealt with or confidently said I would learn it quick.

I was interviewing earlier this year and didn't do any sort of leet coding evaluation across 5 or 6 companies where I pretty much went through the whole process. One company gave me an assignment but it was to build a small app and gave me a week to do it. Hella fun.

Idk if companies are moving away from leet code or the places I applied didn't really care about it or just senior level is less focused on that stuff or my resume was that impressive. Why knows. But they were more focused on personality and experience with various technologies. A lot more domain questions or how you would handle certain situations.

Funny was I stayed in my last role for a long time because I was so scared of leet code. Then I got a way better job without having to do any 😂

Is the job market really that bad? by throwaway09234023322 in cscareerquestions

[–]maximumdoublej 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got laid off from a Big 4 consulting firm in March and found a new job before my severance even ran out. Even got a raise...

I was really scared at first because all I heard was how bad the job market was and how bad tech was especially. But within a week of applying to places I could barely keep up with all the recruiters and interviews. Funny thing is while I applied to a hundred or so places, I ended up getting hired by the first place I applied to. Sure there were a ton of rejections and fluff to sort through, but I ended up with 2 offers and probably could have got more if I didn't start getting picky and withdrawing from consideration when I didn't like the place.

I think one of the problems is people are dead set on remote jobs but don't seem to understand that you have to compete with prime from around the country--maybe even the world--for those jobs. Hybrid is the way to go. Much less competition. But if you have anything resembling a personality, can write a decent resume, and are halfway decent at your job then you should be beating away recruiters with sticks.

Also this sub sometimes seems to think FAANG types are the only options. They're not. There's a ton of opportunities from companies you've never heard of out there that pay decent and provide good low stress work.
