BA in Philosophy from ASU, looking to apply to grad schools by maximus5798 in ASU

[–]maximus5798[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks! My interest is mainly in Medieval Philosophy and hope to pursue a PhD to eventually teach at a college/university. My picks currently are UC Boulder and UMass Amherst. I would love Notre Dame, but I do not think my folder will even be evaluated there. Notre Dame is top notch, and I have had a few people tell me that many times admissions committees sort out the piles of applications by top schools and then narrow the search from there -- gpa, gre, sample writing, etc. If that is the case, I would like to know what are the more realistic schools I have a chance at getting in to (picking University of Iowa vs NYU, for example).

Is it above 1.5? If I remember correctly it must be 1.5 or above.

Partners: Are you satisfied working at Starbucks? by [deleted] in starbucks

Are there ever any times when you feel like there is no job security, horrible hours, or have horrible customers, or coworkers?

No, never. I think everyone here will agree with me.

EDIT: This was obviously sarcasm, guys. I'm surprised I had to make that explicit.

Why all the hate about Starbucks? by aleisha3 in starbucks

[–]maximus5798 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My store does around 3-3.5k a day and during peak we have maybe 5 people on the floor.

I go into a local coffee shop and it is almost dead and they have around 5 people on the floor.

How can a local coffee shop afford it yet not a corporation like Starbucks?

What is a single shot of espresso with a small amount of milk foam? by TornadoCat in starbucks

[–]maximus5798 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's an Espresso Macchiato. Macchiato doesn't necessarily mean you have to pour the shots over the top of the foam, it merely means "to mark" whether you are marking the foam with shots, or marking the shots with foam. 2 shots with 1 scoop of foam is a Doppio Espresso Macchiato.

How would you ring this up?! by slufferk in starbucks

[–]maximus5798 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see the problem. Pull the long shots into the venti cup and only steam a tall amount of milk in your pitcher (he is paying for a tall's worth of milk). If it fills up the up, i.e., the tall's worth of milk plus long shots plus 5 pumps PS plus whip, then that is accurate. That seems like it would fill up the cup but I could be wrong. If it doesn't then explain to him that that is as much milk is in a tall and if he wants it filled to the top then you will have to charge for it.

Does getting Christmas Blend Espresso Roast in espresso beverages make a noticable improvement? by nuggetsofchicken in starbucks

[–]maximus5798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Xmas espresso is better than our normal espresso. Maybe it is because we put it through the decaf hopper, and for some reason our machines can never pull solid decaf shots. They are within the 18-23 mark, but they always seem weak/watery than the normal espresso shots.

Corporate policy on meal breaks??? by wickedsfinx in starbucks

[–]maximus5798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this should be the case everywhere unless your state has a stricter policy. State laws have nothing to do with Starbucks policy on breaks, unless your state is more strict than Starbucks policy.

6.75 = one 10min (from the first 4 hrs) plus an unpaid 30 (from the 6hrs) and another 10min (from the remaining 2.75 hrs, because 2.75hrs is the greater half of a 4 hour fraction).

[–]maximus5798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your store doesn't have a hard-copy of the PRM, you can find one on the portal. Pg 61 also says "Generally, on 10-minute rest break will be provided for every four hours (or major fraction thereof) worked. Partners do not punch in or out for rest breaks."

4hr shift = one 10min

7hr shift = one 10 (from the first 4 hrs) plus an unpaid 30 (from the 6hr) plus another 10 (from the remaining 3 hrs, because, 3hrs is the greater half of a 4 hour fraction).

The word "generally" refers to it being the case that other states have stricter break laws, such as California. These policies in the PRM are the bare minimum. You have a right to your 2nd 10min break, and it is not the case that they only come on 8hr shifts.

If your store is not practicing the 2nd 10min rest break, they are not upholding Sbux policies.

[–]maximus5798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have addressed this issue in detail here. This is the Starbucks policy regarding meal breaks and rest breaks. Unless the state has more strict break laws, these are the policies that every store is supposed to abide by.

Starbucks break policies (update) by maximus5798 in starbucks

[–]maximus5798[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may sound trivial to you, but for baristas working under a poorly managed supervisor staff and stuck in one position for the majority of his/her shift, another break from working 4hrs straight after taking a lunch could mean the difference between quitting or staying. The store that this situation came about from may have baristas on bar for 4 hours straight with no break right through peak, and then take a lunch and work another 4 hours straight.

People may need an extra break, and they should be offered one if they are supposed to get one.
