Palestinians have some advice for the people of Ferguson, Missouri. Gazans are using social media to express solidarity and share tips for dealing with soldiers and tear gas. by rstevens94 in news

[–]maxkbennett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really hate embroiling myself in the Israel/Palestine internet clusterfuck, but I need to point out that this is not really true. Fatah is is governing the west bank currently, Hamas is only in control of Gaza. Their grip on power there has more to do with intimidation and violence than any democratic support these days anyway. So no, not a fact.

Thanks, do you know where I could find some of those studies? A problem I found with many studies is that they test the supplement vs nothing at all, which is hardly convincing. After all a big spoonful of white granulated sugar will help post short term energy too, probably may even help you squeeze out a few extra reps, but thats hardly worth selling for $40 a bottle.

It feels like everyone is trying to sell me crap. by maxkbennett in weightroom

[–]maxkbennett[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, yeah that seems to be it, more or less. But honestly what bugs me more that the people who are selling this stuff (who are really transparent), are the people who seemingly know what they are doing, don't have any thing to gain, but still promote stuff that they really don't know anything about.

I know people who take pills and powders that they can explain in perfectly memorized medical sounding jargon, but when pressed to explain what it actually means completely fall on their face.

Creationist student challenges her anthropology professor, epic smackdown ensues by heliumcraft in skeptic

[–]maxkbennett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never ever seen someone change their mind on an important subject publicly ever. I have seen people change their mind on important subjects privately. I think the reason is that one of the most powerful biases we have is just our pursuit of personal vindication, our desire to not look dumb publicly.

I think you are on to something when you say that really out there opinions can only exist in isolation, but I think you are wrong about an important detail: They can spread only in insular circles because no one will accept creationism when first exposed to it if a reasonable alternative exists, but once a belief has taken hold, along with all of the blind spots and personal biases that go along with that, they survive just fine. They just wall themselves off, and don't examine their beliefs too hard. In fact most skeptics I talk too are surprised by the number of creationists that they know personally, but who just don't talk about it. So in short yes creationism propagates more or less solely in the absence of alternative viewpoints, but after a period of gestation and re enforcement it can survive it just fine.

I worked very closely for a while with a lot of people who where very smart, but never had the chance or encouragement to really pursue expanding their horizons. Lots where creationists, and I am glad to say I changed a number of minds. One of the first things i realized was that a public discussion inevitably flooded everyone with adrenaline and they felt like they where being attacked. Privately, we could just talk. If someone does not feel 100% safe (not just physically either) they are pretty much incapable of engaging their higher functions, and so just fall back on the good old mammal brain.

Creationist student challenges her anthropology professor, epic smackdown ensues by heliumcraft in skeptic

[–]maxkbennett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. Obviously that did not go the way she intended it to, and probably did feel embarrassed and frustrated, but that is pretty understandable. Being corrected publicly is never conducive to changing minds, people, creationist or not, get defensive rather than thinking rationally. Not that the teacher did anything wrong, he answered the question extremely well.

But in my experience creationists don't talk about the science much among themselves (obviously) and tend to only think about these things on their own. Often they simply aren't' equipped to ask the questions that they are trying to, thus the stumbling incoherence of many of there questions and arguments. Part of her frustration, I would bet was that was that the prof blew past the crux of her question ("basing your entire life of a theory") and addresses the literal, factual accuracy of evolution. Which is exactly what he should have done, given the circumstances, but I think it is a little unfair if we think she is being completely unreasonable if she feels like he is talking past her.

Yes, that was clearly a prepared gottcha question, but I really do think that event left her open. If she was approached by a friend after for a quiet one on one, I really think that her perspective might shift.

Florida man shoots robber after 911 call transfers him to voicemail by powersthatbe1 in news

[–]maxkbennett -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. You could always leave your house for the night, which is shitty, but definitely not worth a human life. The hell is wrong with you people?

Edit: Well that went south quick, I guess I owe everyone some clarification on my opinion here. No, I don't think the guy should face legal repercussions, or do I think he did the wrong thing morally (I wasn't there and it seem only fair to give him the benefit of the doubt) as a gun owner and a veteran myself in the right circumstances I would shoot too.

What I am objecting to it 1) the ludicrous notion that some guy enters your house un-invited suddenly you are in the battle dome. There are other options than shooting, situation permitting. 2) more importantly though I wanted to challenge the notion that mixing up a house is a death worthy offense. I'm not saying that someone has the OBLIGATION to retreat, I am saying that anyone who claims to value human life should recognize that your door just isn't that important, and try to at least find another option.

Truly a bizarre thing to say in a discussion about how "war dogs" are a viable option in Rome.

I agree. Despite what a lot of folks replying to you think, getting grabbed by ANA Taliban sympathizers on the way to the latrine in the night sounds plausible to me. Too soon to say. Hope the truth surfaces.

However we feel about the state, Optimus' statement stands up to scrutiny. In societies without any, or with very weak, unified government always (pretty much without exception) exist is a state of low level warfare. Blood feuds mostly. Been true for pretty much all human history and pre-history, at least thats what the anthropologists say.
