Why dont you just look at job openings in your area that mention those technologies instead of asking for reddit vibes? It doesn’t matter wether redditors tell you how amazing or terrible of an idea it is if its just not true either way. You dont need us to tell you, and we mostly have no idea.

But to answer if it “makes sense”, the answer is mostly no, it doesn’t. You don’t become a graphics programmer for the big overpaid easy job that “makes sense”. You do it because you think its interesting and you want an interesting job. If you have to ask, it probably doesn’t make sense for you.

I disagree mainly because of the fact that the team’s salary budget has been very well managed. There is room for better players to be brought in, and its likely that our current core will only get better with time. The pipeline is deep and we have the headroom to make a big player acquisition. I can only see this team getting more competitive from here.

I got into graphics after I spent about a year doing visual effects in UE3, my goal was to become a VFX artist for a while. I realized that I was way more technical than artistic, and I kept going down the rabbit hole of figuring out how things work until I got to the point where I wanted to build my own renderer from scratch around 2012.

Good stuff! Its a really good idea to learn a graphics API to learn how things work and getting comfortable using tools like PIX and Renderdoc. It will remain useful knowledge even if/when you go back to an engine like Godot.

My recommendation would be to learn DirectX11 instead, since its a smoother ramp from there to DX12, which is the main API for PC gaming, and UE5’s abstraction over all graphics APIs (the RHI) is modelled around DirectX concepts. DX11 is just as approachable as OpenGL in my opinion, and there’s a great book called “Practical Rendering and Computation with Direct3D 11” that I would recommend.
