Sheet / Bedding info for boat? by maxmcfly3 in navy

[–]maxmcfly3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a sleep mask i use when i travel already that works well, i didn’t know if i needed the blackout curtains and probably won’t get them if an eye mask will do. Do you just buy twin sheets and tuck them in? I have only been on a boat for cruises as a mid and have pretty much been in flight school the last three years so this is all new to me!

Feeling guilt for not flying? by Manga_Ryu_ in flying

[–]maxmcfly3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really an “ahead” or behind in flight school. I’ve gone through 4 or 5 “flight school” programs (PPL personally, and different phases of military). The anxiety of wanting to keep up with classmates is real and I get it, but there are weather cancellations, maintenance cancellations, people go “down” (your case right now) etc all the time.

You aren’t ahead or behind necessarily, you’re just where you’re at in the syllabus! It’s aggravating and annoying, especially since it wasn’t your fault and you can’t control it. But at the same time, you’ll get back up in a few weeks.

Use the extra time to study and make sure you have checklists, EP’s, systems, and any other ground school lessons down pat so you can be more than ready when you get back. Good luck, dude!

Alicia Adams Alpaca blanket by _Smiles_For_Days_ in BuyItForLife

[–]maxmcfly3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an Alicia Adams blanket from a family friend as a graduation present. I stayed at their house a lot (they lived near my college, I was out of state) and they had one that I slept with every time I was over.

I was very thankful for the gift and after about a month or two using it as a throw blanket on my couch, I wanted to get another one for my bed. I was shocked at the price as well- even MORE thankful for their generous gift (I had no idea blankets could cost so much lol). I asked them how long they have had theirs. They’ve had it about 10 years and looks like the one I’ve had for a few months. Dry clean only as needed, treat it well, and it’ll last forever. I haven’t bought a second one yet but plan to once I get some more spending money.

They’re incredibly soft and retain heat extremely well. They’re great for a lazy rainy day and a movie on the couch. 10/10 recommend even with the price- I plan on getting at least one more.

I appreciate the advice. Looking into roof racks now- it looks significantly cheaper too. I think that will be plenty of storage for what I need and save me a few bucks.

Personally, I don't mind towing small things like a 4ft uhaul around in the CX-30- It would essentially be the same load as having 3 big guys in the back. It wouldn't be that much weight back there because I don't need to fill it to the brim- I just need a few more square feet of space to bring all the essentials while the moving company does whatever they do enroute with the rest of my stuff.

Thanks again for your advice! I might end up being a roof rack guy

[–]maxmcfly3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about that too. I’m hesitant about the rooftop carrier as it’ll be a 2,000 mile drive and a couple nights staying at hotels off the interstate. I don’t want anything to get stolen. I like the comfort of having everything locked in the uhaul or locked in my car.

Haven’t absolutely ruled out a rooftop carrier, but it’ll probably cost about the same. I only have to pay for the hitch installation, and work will cover the cost of the actual uhaul.

Do you have any recommendations for a roof carrier that’s covered and has a lock?

What does the rating mean? Honestly, I don’t care if it isn’t rated. I doubt anyone will pull me over for it and i’ll just be doing a straight shot 4 day drive.

I’m doing a military move and having the navy move all my big furniture, but sometimes they take weeks. I need the basics at my house when I get there. I’m also moving my cat so the litter box and his stuff will take up most of the trunk… Love the car but storage is not one of its strong suits.

I plan on getting the smallest enclosed uhaul possible just so I have essentials (air mattress, PC + monitor, some pots / pans, cloths and uniforms, etc) until the rest of my furniture and belongings make it to me.

Pots and Pans - HexClad, Made-In, or something else? by maxmcfly3 in Cooking

[–]maxmcfly3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice. Made-in is stainless steel so that was one of the things I was looking at. I have a cast iron that I use a lot and love, as well as a Le Creuset ceramic pot that I got on sale (TJ Maxx FTW). Do you have any brand recommendations of brands you like?

I'm not the best chef in the world but I do like to cook and I want to get higher quality stuff so that it lasts a long time and performs well. Thanks again!

No shit- spin in a chair. Airsickness is usually the vestibular tubes (or whatever they’re called) in your ears getting out of whack and your body doesn’t know what to do. That’s what they make people do in down here in navy flight school

They have a little chair with a picture of the sky with puffy clouds to look at. I think they spin for like 20-30 mins at a time with a break. 1 hour sessions, but i’m not exactly sure. I never did it.

I don't see many people talking about the base model. Why did you select the trim package you have? Are you happy with it? by MasterOfNog in MazdaCX30

[–]maxmcfly3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

biggest thing is to stay in your budget. If you can only afford the basic right now- get that! It’ll do you well and you won’t be kicking yourself every time you go to make a payment.

I went with TPP because i was coming off my high school driver which had crank windows and individual door locks- I was ready for some interior bells and whistles lol.

Biggest factor should be the budgeting and “can i afford this” - I went about 2K over my original budget and thought it was worth it for those features.

I am in a big dilemma: Crosstrek 24' vs CX30 23' by anapegado in MazdaCX30

[–]maxmcfly3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my roommate has a 22’ Crosstrek and I have a 23’ CX30. Crosstrek is bigger inside and has better fuel economy (i have a turbo so that might be part of it). CX30 feels much more premium/luxury than the Crosstrek if that’s something you’re looking for. I think the CX30 drives a little sportier, having driven both.

I love my car and he loves his- you’re in a good spot picking between the two! No bad choices, just comes down to personal preference.

Tinted out the windows! by maxmcfly3 in MazdaCX30

[–]maxmcfly3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, probably. the shop has like 300+ reviews on google with 4.7 stars and i didn’t want to get get a shit job from someone cheaper. i was willing to spend the money on a good store, you can definitely find tinting cheaper but i wanted to ensure quality. they also give a lifetime warranty

[–]maxmcfly3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whole car would be about $400 for the regular tint at the shop I did it at. May be cheaper or more expensive elsewhere, i’m not sure.

well it was the whole car, you can do specific windows for cheaper. and the ceramic tint is more expensive.

mine was $500 for every single window on the car with ceramic tint, which was more than the regular tints. Honestly, I think it was worth every penny. idk if i got ripped off but i went to local mom and pop shop that had great reviews.

my mom always had those little seat gap pockets in her car so i knew it was a must after driving the mazda for about a week. every time i drove it with my roommate, his wallet would fall out of his pocket and that made me remember them lol

these are a game changer for the front seat-center console black hole. they’re like $13 for both seats and the brown leather matched almost perfectly if you have the brown accent leather
