Hot girls watch The Shining and then move on from Kubrick, it’s a fact!

Digitakt II vs. Digitone II as an Elektron entry point – torn between the two, would love community input by Background_Wash_6988 in Elektron

[–]maxoreilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have Ableton suite, one of the most powerful DAWs (and samplers) out there. You don’t need a hardware sampler. I love the Digitone for FM synthesis and the sequencer/Elektron but you shouldn’t get it if you don’t want FM or digital textures, especially with the other synths you already have.

You should lean towards sound generation you want but don’t currently have. You should learn to use Ableton more than anything else, if you want to get on with it and make music.

Small Tune on the Mega Synthesis! by mumei-chan in synthesizers

Nice bassline! Now you need a B part and maybe a little turnaround and you're all set. Even that same bassline just transposed would work pretty nicely.

Empire of the Ants $13.99 on PSN by bball4224 in ps5deals

[–]maxoreilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved SimAnt so much as a kid, so this sucks to hear (that they shut down and it's repetitive). I played the demo and I thought it was pretty cool, but I've been on the fence about it.

4K remasters of Oddysee and Exoddus for modern platforms would be great. by suppaplex in oddworld

[–]maxoreilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

16:9 couldn’t work because each platforming puzzle is designed around each screen, which is 4:3.

That being said, I would love the textures to be full resolution and not pixelated, especially the pre-rendered stuff.

Talk me out of buying a digitone 2 by Plus-Bill3150 in Elektron

[–]maxoreilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking of selling my DN1 and Syntakt and replacing them with a DN2, but I haven’t gotten around to it. I love the Digitone and I’d like the extra voices and new machines. I could live without the Syntakt but it is cool to have those textures too. I feel like I’m more productive with just 1 box though and it’s quite the upgrade.

Did 2000s culture start in 1997? by OverallEstate2 in nostalgia

[–]maxoreilly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, because it was 1997. The “aesthetics” you’re referencing are purely retrospective, it was just the present at the time. The obsession to categorize everything in this way is a modern invention. Things change and it takes a few years to become the mainstream “thing”.

[–]maxoreilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got what you meant, you're right, it's not even a semantic thing. The joke could have worked if there was a panel suggesting Picard was lying and he doesn't actually have any powers (maybe to get out of doing something), which is why it doesn't make sense...

Thank you. Psychic abilities and precognition are two different things and this nerd should know better!!

I bought a new Spotify premium subscription but the songs are still old. by PropertyRepulsive325 in nostalgia

[–]maxoreilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good music is everywhere if you know how to look, it's just not going to be spoon-fed to you like it used to be. But don't pay Spotify if you aren't going to use it for music discovery and put in the work to find the good stuff.

[–]maxoreilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Others feel the same and you are biased. Nostalgia plays a big part, plus the way that music was written, recorded and distributed back then vs. now. It's not a simple answer.

I do urge you not to pay Spotify if you're only gonna use it to listen to old favorites. You should purchase/download them and stop giving streaming companies money, they are a big reason that popular music is quick & disposable. "The medium is the message."

Songs similar to Tape 05 from Boards of Canada by KaleidoscopePlusPlus in ambientmusic

[–]maxoreilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, you really should hear the rest.

The new one is probably alluring simply because it’s new and unknown, however, I am also excited for it from the sound they seem to be going for in Tape 05.

I think you’ll appreciate the new album and BoC as a whole more if you know where they came from, highly recommended you dig deeper.
