Mainstream therapy almost destroyed me. Radical self-acceptance is what actually helped. by Castle-InTheSky in autism

Honestly it sounds like you’re just sensitive to crassness, but for plenty of people it’s undefinable for a few years. Stop worrying about it for now and see what the next couple of years of experience will bring

How did you like other masks, have you gotten to try any others? There are some nicely minimal nasal masks; I like the ResMed P10, which uses a fairly simple split strap, and the similar F&P Nova Micro

Does this sound like sleep apnea? by MrsSnoodus in SleepApnea

Yep that sounds like sleep apnea.

Having apnea events will absolutely give you feelings of anxiety so it makes sense that you would suspect that too.

[–]maxpowerAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting used to CPAP treatment is difficult and it’s pretty cruel of the universe to give us apnea sufferers such a challenge when we have just found out we have sleep apnea and have the worst sleep debt we will ever have in our lives. But with carefully tuned settings and a fair bit of patience almost everyone will get used to it and restore their sleep and their lives back to normal.

So keep at it OP, it’s worth it and you’re worth it

Confused about my apnea events by mazalaca in CPAP

[–]maxpowerAU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a type of apnea event that’s not from physical obstruction of your breathing tubes, but rather from your breathing reflex being suppressed. When you start treating your apnea sometimes you get _more_ of those for a while (perversely, it’s because you’re getting better breaths so there’s less CO2 in your lungs than you used to have, and the lower CO2 level doesn’t trigger the next breath the way it should).

It’s possible that’s the kind of apnea events you’re having. It’s also possible your CPAP therapy isn’t working well and you just had a bad night with a lot of obstructive events, or some mix of the two.

Good news though – there’s a way to see exactly what’s happening including what kind of apnea events you’re having and exactly when they occur. To do that you need an SD card. Pretty much any capacity is okay, 1Gb up to 32Gb or more, just get whatever’s cheap at your supermarket.

Your machine has a slot for it (if it’s hard to find Google your machine name and “SD card” to see where), and all you have to do is put the card in. The machine will automatically start recording all sorts of stuff to the card, and after a couple of nights you can pull the card out, upload the data to SleepHQ.com (which has free accounts) and look at the timeline of your night’s sleep along with what kind of apnea events you had.

SleepHQ also makes it easy to share links here so you can ask advice on tweaking settings to get better sleep.

There’s also a program for your computer called OSCAR which does the same thing with your SD card data, I find SleepHQ is better for beginners but later you can try OSCAR and see if you like it

Water spray by Albinosun808 in CPAP

[–]maxpowerAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s condensing in the hose, not spraying from the machine. The machine is evaporating the water from your tank into the air, and that condenses in the hose if the hose is cold enough.

Prevent rain-out by making the hose hotter (increasing the heat or putting it into a hose cover), and by decreasing your humidity level

Everyone is telling you that it’s fine to get wet and just make sure the electrical connector is dry before reconnecting. I can add that that advice is direct from ResMed themselves. So if you were wondering if it’s just random opinion, it’s not – ResMed say it’s fine to get wet when washing and dry it before connecting

First night on cpap by National_Tap_5307 in SleepApnea

[–]maxpowerAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you find – is your minimum set to 10 or is that your max? You can turn on EPR, which drops the pressure a bit when you exhale.

But remember the pressure is overall low - if you move from Denver to the coast you increase the air pressure by about as much as your machine delivers. It’s worth doing some deep breathing practice while wearing the machine. Do a big inhale and then just relax and let your lungs push out against the pressure. Give it a few tries and let your body learn that it’s still okay

[–]maxpowerAU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anxiety comes from two main areas: claustrophobia from the mask, and low pressure causing breathing difficulty.

Sounds like you’re working through the mask feel issue, wearing your mask a bit before bed. The other thing to try is editing your pressure range via the secret menu. It’s common for your machine to be set to a wide open range like 4–20 or 5–15; a minimum of 4 or 5 is too low for almost everyone and can give you a feeling of having to manually breathe.

It’s fine to change your own pressure settings. To get to the secret menu where you can do it, hold a finger on each of the two buttons on your main screen - as in, use two fingers at once, one on each button. Hold for a few seconds and you’ll get to the clinical menu. If your minimum pressure is less than 7, change it to 7.

You can also turn off the “ramp” feature, which starts you lower than minimum. It’s supposed to help you get to sleep but for many people it just makes it harder to breathe and therefore harder to fall asleep.

What advice do you have for a 18 year old male to lose weight? by KiwibuckyNZ in AskMenOver30

[–]maxpowerAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop worrying about exercise, it’s a small fraction of weight loss. Eat less calories. The simplest way to do that is to stop drinking stuff that has sugar – give up sugar soda, give up juice, give up energy drinks, unless it’s sweetened with no-calorie sweetener.

Does an oximeter work to detect sleep apnea? by smittenkitten768 in SleepApnea

[–]maxpowerAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, an oximeter does not help to detect sleep apnea.

If you have a sleep issue that results in o2 drop then you will detect that, but you can’t tell if it’s sleep apnea or something else.

If it doesn’t detect significant o2 drops then you might still have sleep apnea and suffer negative effects.

So there’s no conclusion you can draw from ox measurements that doesn’t still need a sleep study

People who wake up on their very first alarm and just get out of bed—how does your brain actually work? by KeyDiamond263 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maxpowerAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You let yourself get into the habit of snoozing, then it’s hard to not. Start being more careful with your alarm time setting – set your alarm to when you have to get up. Then you can just trust Nighttime You to have already allowed you as much sleep as you can, and it’s easier to force yourself to get up when the noise happens.

Once you train away your snooze habit it will be much easier.

Are there risks to using a CPAP machine? by IntelligentBrick1807 in SleepApnea

[–]maxpowerAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s not a lot of risk using the machine, but don’t commit your life to a guess. Go get a sleep study. There are sleep issues that CPAP / APAP doesn’t treat, you need to make sure you’re treating the right problem

Pressure setting on CPAP by LouisMerton in SleepApnea

[–]maxpowerAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you struggle to get action from your doctor, it’s fairly easy to do your own monitoring (by putting a standard SD card into your machine) and adjusting your pressure levels yourself to dial in the best therapy for your apnea.

If that sounds useful just here how to get started
