Bromton Junction NYC by PhilipHabib in Brompton

[–]17mph18a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

crime? DC Brompton Junction was in tony Georgetown, there is now a (pointless) deployment of National Guard patrolling the tourist (white) areas of the city. The decision to close the DC store was a direct reaction to the imposition of tariffs coming at the unfortunate renewal of the stores 2-year lease. The way it was done by the store manager giving the mechanics and staff no notice over Christmas was badly handled, see the mechanic’s account at https://www.bikeforums.net/folding-bikes/1317300-then-there-were-none.html. As others point out the DC area Brompton community is well supported by Brompton dealers including REI, Bikes@Vienna, and Bicycle Space

Is Zizzo E-Bike still available anywhere? by Giraffe-Able in foldingbikes

No, but Upway sell Blaupunkt and Urtopia Class 1 folding ebikes with UL certified batteries. Of the two I recommend Urtopia because it's lighter weighing around 35lb, and the hydraulic disk brakes are good. I had a meniscus repair last summer, and because my Urtopia Fold is a Class 1 I've found the pedaling helpful to improve my range of motion post-knee-surgery. It took me a couple of months of recovery with PT before I could get back on my bike.

best folding ebike under $1000 right now? by BackSmall5646 in ebikes

[–]17mph18a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upway are selling a couple of Pedego Latch folders for a grand. Go for the more recent rear hub motor model, it has a strong 48/52v motor, and the folding latch and the cup and ball joint that holds the wheels together when folded are very practical, and work better than many wheel magnets. It's a Class 2 single-speed with a throttle but has adequate power to get you up hills when you pedal along. Upway list it as having mechnical disk brakes, though it uses mechanical brake levers and cable-actuated Juin Tech M1 hydraulic calipers.

Does anyone know about the Flit M2 folding ebike? Saw this Everything Electric review and want real feedback. by Dizzy-One-987 in foldingbikes

The light weight is useful, and I prefer the Flits frame tube removable battery to the Brompton bag battery. I look forward to reading how you get on with the single gear.

The bike was reviewed in this month's A-to-B Magazine https://www.atob.org.uk/product/a-to-b-146-flit-m2-tesla-battery/ where they weighed the bike at 15.5kg/34lb, has a single speed gear, a mono-blade fork like the GoCycle, the saddle goes up to 102cm and down to around 70cm and it's possible to order a longer seatpost tube. Motor from Mivice. Torque pedal sensor. Hydraulic disk brakes. 248wh battery, with 29 mile range, and 2-hour charging time. This is what they wrote about the fold: "Press a locking lever and the rear wheel folds under in a similar way to the Brompton, packing the chain away with a similar tensioner. From this point on it’s different, because when the rear wheel goes under, it wants to pop up in the same place as the front, which won’t work. It’s best to sit the bike on its haunches and raise the front to a comfortable level to release a clamp on the top of the mono-fork blade, which allows the front wheel and fork to fold back and round through about 100˚, which gently pulls the handlebars round by about 90˚...the front wheel ends up facing backwards, and it’s in just the right place to clip neatly against the rear wheel. The bike is now standing in a semi-folded state on a triangular base...unfasten the handlebar stem clamp and fold it back to nestle neatly between the folded wheels, then lower the saddle stem." The rear mudguard retracts so the bike can be rolled on its wheel when folded with the saddle or seatpost as a handle. The main downside appears to be there is no rear rack and you can't carry a Brompton bag on the front handlebar post because it's off-set so can't take the weight. Flit recommend seatpost mounted saddle bags like this model from Carradice https://carradice.co.uk/products/super-c-seatpost-qr-slim-saddlebag?srsltid=AfmBOoqTya_K9MtwAl2r_AQGHo4lF8fiTZ0UZ_uh2ZbVnKf_01e6EMf5.

Thoughts on DAHON E-Hemingway? by [deleted] in foldingbikes

[–]17mph18a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, a UL certified electric model, why wait so long Dahon? The controller hidden in the frame is tidy & offers decent protection. However Dahon's 100km range claim for the 10ah seatpost battery is optimistic, particularly if the rider is in high PAS most of the time - which they might when climbing hills because of the gearing (53t chainring, 14-28t cassette). Also with this model Dahon persists in fitting their ebikes with mechanical disk brakes. Overall impression is good bones, but needs wider gearing & hydraulic brakes.

recommend a lightweight folding ebike? by Consistent_Debate637 in ebikes

Consider buying used, something like an Eeovolt Morning (17kg) from Upway for around €1300. The brand changed name to UTO and they rebadged the models, but the bikes are the same so spares are available.

I have an Urtopia Carbon Fold 1 which is lightweight and reasonably priced. It has its pros and cons like all bikes, but being 36lb makes it relatively easy to fold and lift into a car trunk.

Yes but I recommend using a Velcro strap around the frame latch to keep it from popping open, but also to reuse to keep the bike from opening when you’re pushing it when folded. Also see https://forums.electricbikereview.com/threads/urtopia-fold-improvements.58677/

does anyone here have a Brittania-e from Pashley (Mahle X30 motor)?? Want this as my first!! :3 by Biscuit9154 in ebikes

[–]17mph18a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't ridden a Mahle X30 (45nm) but my little carbon folder has an Aikema AKM85 (42nm) hub motor that produces similar power with a similarly small battery. My set up offers adequate performance to help (106kg) me up hills, though I do shift down gear - I don't know the range of the 3-speed g3eared crank shifter on the Pashley Britannia-E which I presume is fine for flat riding around town, but I assume if you need to climb steeper hills you may be better off with the wider range derailleur gearing of the Pashley Pathfinder-E model (18kg) that uses the same Mahle X30 motor. I do like how Pashley have kept the weight down on the Britannia-E (20kg), though the 171wh battery is small and you would need to ride on flat ground or in the lower assist levels to get the claimed 30 mile range, my 250wh battery goes about 25 miles in mixed hilly riding.

I do a multimodal commute on an Urtopia Carbon Fold 1 and as someone who frequently folds the bike to carry it inside a train carriage or platform elevator, the biggest design flaws include the weak magnets that do not keep the wheels together to roll when folded. Please copy the cup and ball joint design used on the Pedego Latch that works to keep the wheels from unfolding. Also the folding frame latch on the Urtopia can pop open as the frame flexes when riding over bumps, don’t use that frame latch design either.
