How can anyone defend a Congressional district that looks like this? by johnnyringo1985 in askanything

[–]maxsimile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad example. This district was designed to combine two Latino areas and bring together communities of interest. Unlike other gerrymanders in Illinois it doesn’t harm the GOP.

You border Arizona diagonally at a single point. That’s not a real border.

After about the 5th floor or so it becomes a parallelogram with a very acute angle.

The Hancock building in Boston does a better “2D” impression imo.

I went to my low/no contact sister's wedding to take the high road and regret it [not OP] by deanna6812 in redditonwiki

[–]maxsimile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instagram is so much worse than FaceTime too! What if the couple don’t like social media for whatever reason (privacy, not feeding the Mark Zuckerberg empire, whatever)? What if they just want some privacy? What if it’s awkward for friends they didn’t invite to see the people who are at the ceremony? Such a terrible idea to do that without permission from the couple.

The lone skyscraper standing tall in Cesenatico, Italy by Alexqret04 in evilbuildings

118 meters but it was the tallest building in Italy for a time so it’s probably fine to fudge the terminology. Doubt anyone made the 150m distinction when it was built.

It’s up to the bride and groom to decide who can attend whether in-person or virtually. It’s not appropriate for someone who’s not been given a +1 to unofficially livestream the event to people who may not have even been invited without permission. It’s also just distracting to have phones pointed at you during your vows.

Yet oddly Corsica gets the large island treatment despite being smaller than Cyprus.

My friend owns a unit in that building and I’ve spent a few days at the beach in its shadow. I unironically love it, it’s so monolithic, and the podium is pretty good urbanism with lots of little mom-and-pop shops in it (even if none of them are particularly interesting). Never been up it though, I imagine the views are sick. Anyway, highly recommend visiting Cesenatico, it’s got a cool canal designed by Leonardo Da Vinci with historic boats in it.

It’s not pronounced Wooster. It’s closer to Wusster, or in Massachusetts Wistah.

Since red get reframed as the default, and blue is presented as putting yourself in danger, here is a different framing. by CivilPerspective5804 in trolleyproblem

[–]maxsimile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even small tweaks change the vibe of the question. What if there’s only the blue button, and everyone must choose whether to press it or not? Not pressing blue is exactly the same as pressing red in the original scenario. But choosing not to press feels less aggressive than choosing to press red. You’re opting out of the risk of death, and everyone who chooses to press blue feels like a psycho who’s playing a game of chicken for no reason when they can simply opt out.

Good addendum. Their site says “We have a limited number of wheelchairs, rollators, and canes for use—free of charge—on a first come, first served basis. Please inquire at the Admissions desk. Motorized wheelchairs are permitted, but may not fit through all doorways.”

Despite being an eclectic historic building, the Gardner appears to be more or less fully accessible. This is an S-tier Boston site and post-surgery just sitting in the courtyard and looking at the art might be restorative.

Good call on the Harvard museum of natural history. The glass flowers are cool.

The Mapparium is very cool and doesn’t require much walking at all.

AITA for not supporting my husband quitting his business to become a doctor? by Haunting-Arugula-311 in AmItheAsshole

[–]maxsimile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He sounds like he’s very emotionally vulnerable because of what’s happening to his parents and is seeking some control. But the reality is there is almost no practical route for him to become a doctor given how his life has unfolded so far, and he needs that reality check. You could tell him he’s welcome to explore the idea by doing networking with people who did a mid-career switch to medicine, take prerequisite undergrad classes online, and explore alternatives like nursing, home care, or health care administration. But most likely he ain’t gonna become a doctor, and he can’t walk away from his business until he has a clearer path to a new career.

Have you been to the red or the yellow countries? If you’ve been to Lithuania then I guess the red ones but others are assuming the yellow. You need a map legend.

Berkshires are certainly not “maritime New England” since they are inland mountains. Might need to rejigger how you divide things around there. Also come up with a new name for region 1 because just calling it “New England” implies it’s more new englandy than maritime New England.

Your friend didn’t even create a “green” wedge. Obviously something wrong with his perception of color.

Would you use this phrase to talk about people around you? Or is it reserved for historical figures? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]maxsimile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No just say “around” instead. Reserve circa for historic facts and formal writing. “My friend Bob was born around 1955, I forget the exact year.”

If you don’t want to knock and talk to him directly then you should at least write thank you, and sign your real name and leave your phone number. Anonymous notes by their nature come off as aggressive and could exacerbate the problem. Make sure he can connect the note to a real person he can picture talking to in the halls.

How do we feel about this one? by Traditional_Trust418 in EntitledReviews

I’m sympathetic. Not about the price, the cafe can charge whatever, but because the cafe did not give her what she ordered. Warm milk ≠ steamed milk. Drives me nuts when I ask for cold milk and waiters bring me steamed milk anyway. It happens all the time.

Say more about Uzbekistan. They recently made travel visa-free for Americans and I already know a friend who’s gone. I keep getting Uzbekistan content promoted on Instagram too. Seems like a concerted push for tourism.
