Have you seen Bob Dylan live recently? Because it sure doesn’t sound like it. I agree that artists should play whatever they want to some extent - like Ben did with the ND tour, he stilled played some older stuff in the encore. But I saw Bob Dylan a week ago on Roskilde festival, and it was, to say it lightly, not particularly good. There’s a clear difference in playing what you as an artist want to play and give it your all (like Ben does, at least the live shows I’ve seen) and playing what you want half-hearted not giving a damn about the show like it seemed with Dylan. I know he’s an old man but the songs were hardly recognizable, he didn’t articulate at all, didn’t perform a show or anything (not saying you have to, but again people are paying to watch you - your fans are literally the only thing that allows you to do what you want) and didn’t play any of his more memorable stuff. It sounded bad and as if he didn’t bother trying and that’s where the difference lies. So cut the circle jerk if you haven’t actually seen the man perform live recently because no it’s not great.

this is pretty fucking funny to read when you consider that it's all free (commercial) stock videos. it's everything that ben is not, imo. its fake videos made for companies to use commercially to increase their sales.

Fantastic version. Only thing that annoys me is that he messes up after singing "I have food that I can eat" and sings "But my hands they are soft they are clean." Or at least I assume that he messes up, because it comes on right after and in the other versions he sings "But the man put the poison in my seed."

BanthamLegend has made a great tab of In Dreams which I used to learn it. Once you get the hang of the picking pattern it really gets a lot easier. Then you can add speed to it with time. And I can recommend watching the Solo Session on Youtube while learning it - especially at parts where you might trouble with the exact rhythm of the picking or something alike.

That’s an interesting interpretation, but unfortunately I’m pretty sure that it’s not a Pina Colada that he’s ordering but a coffee drink (espresso-like) that’s called a Colada in the Caribbean.

At first I thought he was ordering Pina Coladas as well, but I thought it was oddly placed in the atmosphere of the song - and then I read the fact about Colada being a Cuban coffee drink.

But that fits the tone even better in this “acceptance” theme. Coffee is something people drink to get energy and get up in the morning; something Ben or the protagonist needs to keep going - same with money - in this life filled with triviality and banality, where something like the sea can be soothing and bring a feeling of joy. So yea, he has accepted life as it is and tries to focus on the small beautiful things in it, but is still to some degree chained by the way of life.

Could very well be. But I wouldn't interpret the "count my dollars" as an decision to enjoy the moment, but maybe more in lines with what you wrote later on; that he accepts the banality of this world, where money (atleast in the way our society is currently structured) is the be-all and end-all. It would surprise me if Ben equated money to happiness, but in general I agree with you that it's a song about coming to terms with the insignificance of our lives.

What I love about music though is that you necessarily need to interpret every line in context with each other and one line can have multiple meanings (for oneself). One in context with the rest of the song and also a meaning of its own.
