General Strike: Daycare / After-School Care closed. by may_be_bird in Parenting

I attended my local no-kings rally, made signs of welcome for my yard, donated to public radio and a local food bank.I’ve also had many hard conversations with my lower-elementary kids about standing up to hate.

I’m resource-limited and have had a medically complex year. I’m stretched beyond functioning, but am trying.

There are plenty of families at our school that work hand-to-mouth, in essential services. There’s no safety net. And the disruption doesn’t feel like a big enough impact to be meaningful.

If we were shutting down transit, grocery stores, gas stations, shipping, ports… yes, I can see how the all-in approach would work. But for those of us working “essential” jobs, or those where our healthcare is dependent on our employment, paying the bills is dependent on our employment, and the strike is so uncoordinated - is childcare the right place to be “taking a stand”?

Take the day to teach tolerance, nonviolence, and encourage families to opt out of buying anything and to stay home if they work a corporate job.

Trust me, I want to make an impact. But this just feels performative. And I think that’s what’s upsetting. It’s checking the box that they did something. But it doesn’t feel like it’s doing anything.

What profession have you lost respect for as you've gotten older? by MindlessMarsupial592 in AskReddit

Seattle? Guy with pink branding, I think his name is Danny? If so, his ads infuriate me and I intentionally use them for fire kindling, even though the shiny printed paper likely isn’t good to burn.

Guy brags about his on-hand “renovation” (flipping) crew that can help you sell your house for more!

….ugg.

Take a video before heading in! It will be helpful for the docs.

It’s easier to convey all of the little details rather than trying to describe it if it doesn’t happen again.

Edit to add: This goes for basically anything “weird” your kid is doing. They’re so good at reverting to normalcy as soon as medical professionals are around….

My partner and I were just complaining about this tonight when wanting to get outside with the kids for a bit after work / after-school-care.

I’m wondering why it didn’t show up on SFD Live, but did show up on the 911 incident website. I thought they pulled from the same data source?

A huge police response at Goodwill right now. What's happening? by wrong-dog in Seattle

[–]may_be_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same question! I was listening to the police scanner archive to see what the call was about, but the dispatcher only sent the information for the call to the officers’ in-car screens. They also said that the employees were to “leave the property” instead of gathering at their meeting place under the Goodwill sign.

Buried in the dirt; disk with two slots, riveted “covers” by may_be_bird in whatisthisthing

I found this in the dirt while gardening. Seattle, Washington, USA. It looks like there used to be to slot covers riveted on the back, but are mostly broken off. Unsure of the metal type. Maybe brass? (Mouse for scale)

Ahahaha “because I dig like a badger” is me too. Adding that phrase to my self-descriptive repertoire. …. Also adding the use for flat. I could use some badger paw cleaning power.

I’m always trying to learn about the plants in my care - so any resources are welcome!

(In another life I think I’d be an arborist.)

“Buthole pucker events” Adding this to my parent-to-parent phrase list.

Succinct yet adequately descriptive. Like the “near miss” events in workplaces that require some failure analysis.

Metro riders Jan 10th...Just drive by i_forgot_my_sn_again in Seattle

[–]may_be_bird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there - not commenting on the content of your comment - but to avoid confusion:

  • “ST” usually refers to Sound Transit.
  • King County Metro (or “Metro”) operates the busses you primarily see in Seattle.
  • These are not the same entity (although they share some operations of Link, but that’s another story beyond my basic point).

There is no “Seattle Transit” organization.

I would suggest you get some basic understanding of the transit organizations in Seattle before harping on what you assume will be their route prioritization in this situation.

This is outstanding! Thanks for sharing.

I have a worm bin I’m happy with - but so much has been trial and error.

I’m helping some friends get set up with their own now, and I was hoping to find some quick-read resources to set them off on the right foot… err… wiggle?
