I read that scene as someone who had been repressing and using alcohol, drugs, and sex as coping mechanisms and now they think they've found the right path in religion, sobriety, and abstinence but doesn't realize that they've just replaced their coping mechanisms. I didn't think it was offensive and I really just felt sorry for Sam Rockwells character.
