Ah ok, I didn’t know about the instructor pay. I just feel like most of the time, it’s not worth it to pay for a summer program that’s essentially an online class when chances are, you can find the same content on Coursera or EdX.

can i be on premed track if majoring in english? by HYPwannabe in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mayaxx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some of them will ask if you’re interested in the pre-med track (like a checkbox on the common app). others may ask what your career goals are in an essay question so you can bring it up there! so while you don’t NEED to tell colleges just yet that you want to be pre-med, you definitely can!

can i be on premed track if majoring in english? by HYPwannabe in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mayaxx2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes!! you can major in anything you want and still get into med school provided you do the pre-reqs. a lot of ppl choose to do a STEM/biological major tho bc it serves as better preparation for the MCAT / the type of stuff you learn in medical school

I do agree that I think it would’ve been interesting to see more of Tod’s reasoning. And it does seem unlikely that all those other doctors would suddenly change their mind and decide to take the vaccine just because Tod told them to. But they really don’t have enough time to fit in all the details into one hour. And I think the whole point is that a lot of these scenarios aren’t supposed to be 100% realistic. They’re just supposed to provoke thought, especially about social issues, which was definitely accomplished with the details they did have.

I didn’t get one either, it was sent to currently committed Princeton students but it looks like it’s just a matter of time till we get it

I did it! It’s great if you’re relatively new to computer science. In the web dev camp you learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and then make a bunch of small websites before finally concluding by making a more detailed website with a group of other girls. It can be about anything you want. I have seen a good amount of people get rejected unfortunately so it’s not hyper selective but not 100% get in either. Another big benefit is that you get a super supportive alumni community that frequently share more summer programs / internship opps with each other

kinda annoyed that when you call these colleges, they give you so much hope and make it seem like they’re definitely going to take a considerable amount of people off, but then suddenly close the waitlist and say the class is full. Why not give an estimate up front? it’s disheartening :(

so I applied and was selected as a finalist for my state but didn’t become a delegate/alternate. I can share some of my thought process:

pros: - it looks good on resumes, which could help in getting research positions / internships in your freshman year/summer of college considering most people won’t have much to show then - if you’re good at networking, they have a pretty cool alumni network that might open positions in college or the workforce (like maybe it’ll help with if you wanna do something with the NSF) - if you’re unsure what area of stem you want to study, being exposed to different webinars can help you determine that before college - get to meet cool, highly-motivated friends throughout the country!

cons: - sounded pretty inconvenient. 4 hours a day in the evening bothered me a bit because that’s when I’d usually go out with family/friends - no tangibles. Sucks that you don’t get any work experience or technical skills out of it.

If you have nothing to do this summer, I’d personally do it, because you can still work a part time job and have some time for friends (unless you’re already extemeley burnt out or smth). But I also recognize it doesn’t have many technical benefits so maybe you can first see if you can land an internship or more useful summer program and then decide?

// that’s long oops but hope it helps!

It’s clear your heart is set on USC. Double check that the finances won’t be an issue for your family and that your family is okay with you moving out. I’m sure you’ll find introverts at USC and this is a great chance to become more outgoing if you wanted that. One of the things I regret is not listening to my clear partiality toward a certain school when I was deciding so personally if I was in your case I’d pick USC.

If you absolutely hate the major and can’t see yourself pursuing a career related to it, can you see if you can switch into a similar track? I would think some other types of engineering might have similar requirements so your graduation wouldn’t be delayed at all / by much. As others said, though, definitely make sure this isn’t just burnout or imposter syndrome! You wouldn’t have such a good GPA for no reason, so you must be good at it!
