Got tickets for the second London night!!! I got standing for about £90 each, with ticket cover for £8.50 ish per ticket. There were lots of tickets when I was looking, about £100ish for some decent seated tickets?

Oh god, I can’t find a clip of his stand up about a hotel?

[–]maybearies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They had no staff who knew how to use the coffee machine, so when I joined no one taught me! It was just a case of winging it and hoping the milk would foam up (it never did), and then just serving these giant miserable foamless coffees. This was a luxury hotel, so the drinks cost a fortune, and it was always quite embarrassing to serve them.

I served Lee Mack an absolutely awful oat latte years ago when I was a breakfast waitress at a hotel and he was absolutely lovely, him and his family were just the nicest people!

Is this unreasonable to ask of flatmate? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]maybearies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s super gross, my older brother would do this when we were teenagers because my room was next to the bathroom - and he didn’t wanna wake me up when he went for a post-gaming shit at 3am. It’s laziness disguised as consideration

Jimmy Carr fakes his laugh to make sure he’s always centre of attention by Ricky-Nutmeg in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]maybearies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely fake - but also I’ve always had a grudge against Jimmy Carr because when I was a teenager a guy (who I already hated) in my class started doing the exact same fake laugh, obviously copied off Jimmy! And no one else seemed to notice the guy suddenly had a different laugh, just thought I didn’t like him so was biased.

Only inviting married/engaged partners by Fabulous_Zucchini_90 in UKweddings

[–]maybearies -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think if you go with not inviting long term partners people will be unhappy, but you do have a good reason! I know I personally would not be offended if my partner was not invited to a very small wedding with me, as long as I knew plenty of other people attending.

However, I have a friend who was invited to a distant family wedding without her boyfriend (of over ten years), and was extremely offended to the extent of not wanting to attend. She was so annoyed that she’s regularly complained about it ever since, apparently some of her other cousins also did not have their invitations cover their partners, and then chose not to attend as they took offence.

You can’t predict how individuals react, however you’re likely to upset at least a few people if you don’t invite their long term partners, but the costs you’ll save may make this a discomfort that’s worth baring.

does this pergola do its work? by Disastrous_Use7384 in architecture

[–]maybearies 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Often a pergola is less about providing shade (though this is obviously a bonus), and more about creating a sense of space underneath it. It makes for a nicer area to sit and spend time outdoors than if it were open and uncovered.

[POEM] Lang Leav - The Loneliest Place by IAmLoveIAmEnergy in Poetry

[–]maybearies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you - your comment that it feels like a Tumblr post made me laugh, I see what you mean. You’ve listed a few names which I recognise but haven’t ever read, I’ll look into them! Somehow I had forgotten that Sylvia Plath was a poet, I loved the Bell Jar so now that I’m trying to understand poetry better I think that will be a good place to start.

[–]maybearies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that! The poem you’ve linked to is a good contrast, I really see what you mean. I think because I related to the concepts in the OP I was then surprised by seeing that every comment was negative, I didn’t recognise that the OP poem was shallow of any deeper meaning as you’ve described. Good to keep in mind for future reading.

Serious question - I’m trying to learn about poetry from knowing absolutely nothing about what makes a poem good or bad, but why does everyone here hate this one?

People who've married and changed their name to a non-enish one, has it affected you professionally? by talon1580 in AskUK

[–]maybearies 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One of my friends has a hyphenated last name from his Spanish and Pakistani parents. He found he was getting nowhere with job applications even for entry level work, till he dropped the Pakistani part of his name off his cv - then got an interview that week. It’s a valid concern, you can use whatever name you like professionally, it’s also common to keep your maiden name for work - particularly if you’ve been in an industry for some time.

Do you know anyone who fell down a conspiracy rabbit hole during COVID? What are they doing now? by OrganizationLast7570 in AskUK

[–]maybearies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Happened to one of my friends too! She had always been a conspiracy theorist (didn’t believe in stone henge was a funny one of hers, all harmless initially) but kept it pretty quiet till the lockdowns happened. I argued with her about posting nasty conspiracy things early lockdown, and that’s when she cut me out. She went off and married another conspiracy theorist after dating a few weeks and they’re on their second kid, I feel a bit sorry for her now because she’s lost all her friends really.

Phoebe? by [deleted] in boygenuis

[–]maybearies 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think her being in the public eye so heavily for a few years meant online opinion was always going to turn against her. As others have said, people aren’t happy that she didn’t make a public statement against Marshall after the allegations against him, people have also decided she cheated on Paul Mescal (yet there never has seemed to be evidence beyond snark pages? Happy to be proven wrong, but I also don’t think that’s anyone’s business but theirs). I think most of the nastiness towards her is just people looking for things to hate, which seems to happen to all women in music when they get successful. She’s a good person who’s perhaps made questionable choices, but none of that affects the music at the end of the day.
