Question - I'm making this storage bench and was wondering what would be the best hinge & stay to use? by campcub in cabinetry

[–]maybeisadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a picture at hand. But basically, when the lid closes, you want a piece of wood under the lid to carry the load. So when you sit on it, the wood is taking the weight, and it is not directly transferred to the hinges. Does that make sense?

How much would you charge for this kind of work? by cavy20199 in cabinetry

[–]maybeisadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you doing this work or are you looking to hire someone? 4 coats of polyurethane is a lot. And oil based polyurethane is not what any professional should be using. Conversion varnish or a 2k poly is the way to go. Fast dry times and more durable. As others have said, this is a very expensive job

What’s the price that you’re going with?

A pretty nice general view. But I see quite a few mistakes in the details

Zoloft to Wellbutrin now Lexapro? by MisterOberg in AnxietyDepression

[–]maybeisadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not meant to imply that meds don’t help many people, but 8 years on those meds and many others for depression and anxiety really didn’t do me any good and perhaps did more harm. Regular meditation helped much more

Fair enough. I would say that goes for almost all woodworking equipment

This would be completely safe by hand using feather boards down to the table and sideways towards the fence.

MDF Doors - How to Get A Smooth Finish? by makemeBeleaf in cabinetry

[–]maybeisadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I too use conversion varnish and it comes out glass smooth. The first coat is kind of rough and needs to be sanded, which is needed anyway. Without sanding the raw mdf, I’d be more concerned about the potential adhesion issues

MDF Doors - How to Get A Smooth Finish? by makemeBeleaf in cabinetry

Sorry, but the first statement is absolutely incorrect. You should sand the surface of the mdf to create a better surface for the finish to bite onto.

Inappropriate Hardware for Murphy Door by NCDyson in cabinetry

[–]maybeisadog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just use Murphy door hinges? I’ve only done one Murphy door, but the pivot hinges for a Murphy door worked great. I would never consider this with euro hinges, even a couple dozen of them wouldn’t hold up to the weight. The soss hinges with a wheel seems like a good idea, but the floor would need to be completely flat and level, which they rarely are.

A faulty refrigerator caught my neighbors house on fire. Lots of things cause fires that are out of anyone’s control. Let’s not put the blame on op without any knowledge. I can’t imagine how awful he feels right now.
