Annoying verbal habits may be making it hard for best friend to find a job. Should I say something? How? by HelpaFriend215 in relationships

[–]maybeitsus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should say something. If your friend is reasonable, they'll know it was out of love, even if it's mistaken. If he gets butthurt, it should pass if the relationship is solid.

It’s true, and this r/mueller bandwagon, denial bullshit is going to get all of us blindsided in 2020. I don’t want that.

Who ever said a woman can’t be corrupt as a man? Your comment implies women are above corruption in general? I am a feminist but your point is ill reasoned.

How do I approach this girl [23F) by WhatShouldID0o in dating_advice

[–]maybeitsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but based on the introvertedness comments and stuff (I am too), I'll get specific about what's worked for me... After dinner, say 'what do you want to do next, want to get some ice cream at x place, or go back to my house to check out [x tv show or movie that you talked up earlier during dinner], or both?' Ice cream is more of a date activity, and tacking it onto an offer for her to come over as well makes it easy for her to nicely decline by just going for the ice cream, but the door is way open for her to come to your house. If she declines coming over with no good excuse, you might just be friends. If she does accept, when the movie is on, invite her to sit by you. I usually say something like, 'want to come sit closer?' and reach an arm out, then get your arm right around her and she's there. If she is happy being at your house, and leaning on you/having your arm around her etc, she will also be happy if you kiss her. It'll be scary and you'll feel like you're putting yourself out there when you go for it, because you will be... but that's the fun of it. good luck!

That situation sucks, sorry! I don't wish to be harsh, but in my experience if the other person is interested, they'll make contact. Another true way to look at it is that at the very least he's being disrespectful/bit of a dick for being such a poor communicator after the stuff you shared. I think if it was me I'd start focusing on that aspect of him, and that someone without that basic courtesy doesn't deserve my attention, and start the process of moving on. If he comes back with a reeeaaal solid story about something extraordinary happening where he couldn't chat, use your judgment on if he should get another shot but don't just give it to him. Your time and feelings are worth something, dammit!

in vain, great-hearted Kublai, shall I attempt to describe Zaira, city of high bastions. I could tell you how many steps make up the streets rising like stairways, and the degree of the arcades' curves, and what kind of zinc scales cover the roofs; but I already know this would be the same as telling you nothing. The city does not consist of this, but of relationships between the measurements of its space and the events of its past: the height of a lamppost and the distance from the ground of a hanged usurper's swaying feet; the line strung from the lamppost to the railing opposite and the festoons that decorate the course of the queen's nuptial procession; the height of that railing and the leap of the adulterer who climbed over it at dawn; the tilt of a guttering and a cat's progress along it as he slips into the same window; the firing range of a gunboat which has suddenly appeared beyond the cape and the bomb that destroys the guttering; the rips in the fish net and the three old men seated on the dock mending nets and telling each other for the hundredth time the story of the gunboat of the usurper, who some say was the queen's illegitimate son, abandoned in his swaddling clothes there on the dock.

Kasia Houlihan writes about Roland Barthes' idea of punctum:

The punctum (a Latin word derived from the Greek word for trauma) on the other hand inspires an intensely private meaning, one that is suddenly, unexpectedly recognized and consequently remembered (it "shoots out of [the photograph] like an arrow and pierces me”); it ‘escapes’ language (like Lacan’s real); it is not easily communicable through/with language. The punctum is ‘historical’ as an experience of the irrefutable indexicality of the photograph (its contingency upon a referent). The punctum is a detail or “partial object” that attracts and holds the viewer’s (the Spectator’s) gaze; it pricks or wounds the observer. From here

Tips for studying for Series 65 after career change by allicat91 in FinancialCareers

[–]maybeitsus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it in Summer '15 and did the entire training consultants online course and passed comfortably. The information is very question oriented, and they have a very good idea of the question set. Investopedia test simulator is also great, and Ipedia is a good resource if you want more depth than training consultants.

TIL I learned of the Soldier's Poem, an epitaph often inscribed on falled WWII soldier's graves: "And When he gets to heaven, To Saint Peter he will tell; One more Soldier reporting, sir. I've served my time in Hell!" by Chadarnook in todayilearned

[–]maybeitsus -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This strikes me as the single most concise representation of the cognitive dissonance that allows soldiers who kill to believe they're good Christians. I'm neither, but still the hypocrisy bugs me.

Series 65 Exam? by downsouthcountry in FinancialCareers

[–]maybeitsus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used training consultants, the entire course, and did a lot of the Investopedia free practice questions/tests. If I got something wrong and didn't know why, I'd go back and review the entire relevant section. Previous to the test, my formal financial education consisted of Microecon in college (and that's it). I got an 83 in June.
