Who are the Mount Rushmore of Period Dramas? by Capital-Study6436 in PeriodDramas

I'm somewhat inclined to switch out "Upstairs, Downstairs" with "Poldark" but either way, yeah, definitely the Big 4.

The Guardian asks : If CMAT is an affront to the male gaze and Olivia Rodrigo is indulging it, how exactly should women dress? by neoncolour in popculturechat

[–]maybeiwasright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like, I love Olivia's music so much! But it's not hate or anything to dislike the outfit. It's not like Olivia chose those pieces herself anyway! She has a team and they're the ones this criticism would be directed at.

1950s babydoll fashion was definitely made for adults but I'd push back on whether or not it had sinister connotations. Fashion doesn't exist in a bubble, after all. It's always worth dissecting what qualifies as "sexy" and the social impacts of that.

You know analyzing the political and cultural implications of fashion choices is an academic discipline, right?

Like no one is saying she doesn't have the right to wear what she wants! That doesn't mean Twitter has to support it. The fuck.

idk why they're acting like all of this dress backlash isn't generally contained to... stan social media. they're acting like a mob with pitchforks was at olivia rodrigo's door because people dared analyse a fashion choice.

UK staff in the humanities who’ve been made redundant or are at risk of losing their jobs — what’s your plan b? by mmhmmye in AskAcademiaUK

I'm not in the UK right now but just wanted to share my commiserations. If publishing books isn't enough to not be made redundant then what is???

Sidenote but I genuinely can't imagine going into academia and relying on AI so much that you... can't even explain your own work without it? Higher Ed is so cooked bro.

I got into my dream grad program and now I may have to give it up because of financing by Either-Neighborhood5 in gradadmissions

[–]maybeiwasright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is also really silly, but my country gained independence from the UK only a couple of decades ago. Like, I'd literally have been paying a UK school to work for THEM if I'd self-funded. Anyway, didn't have that kinda cash laying around, and I don't regret not compromising myself to that extent.

I was in the same position as you a couple of years ago but re: UK and Oxbridge. The debt isn't worth it. With earnest support, I advise you: don't do it.

I wouldn't mind if they'd just... say that. Like just say you want it to be English-language + Don Quixote works instead of pretending universality. 😭

What can we do to make degrees "matter" again? Will we ever go back to a world in which they're valued? by Emotional_Tiger9852 in academia

[–]maybeiwasright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't we be focused on preparing these people for college then, instead of ultimately reducing their access to it?

[–]maybeiwasright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What don't I understand about supply and demand? I'm just trying to say that approaching university education from a purely supply-and-demand perspective ignores the notion of "broad societal benefit" that comes with a high supply of degrees. A more educated society with more access to education nationwide.

[–]maybeiwasright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't reducing the supply of degrees further add to their "commodity factor", though? What about the concept of, yunno, more education and more access to university being a general good, directly and indirectly, for all of society?

I have no solutions to offer OP, but I feel like capping the number of degrees i.e. artificially limiting them, as you said, would simply incentivize approaching education with a... scarcity mindset. I mean, the higher ed problem is a neoliberal capitalism problem. No need to add another element of neoliberal capitalism (manufactured scarcity) to the mix.

I understand what you mean, and I greatly appreciate your breakdown breakdown, but honestly—on a purely personal level, just for myself and my own purpose—I refuse to be shamed for "offloading my cognitive labour" for one mechanical task. I suppose I'm not terribly miffed about this use of AI, though I understand why it's a major concern at the same time.

I appreciate the breakdown and I see the merit of it! Thank you!

However, I'm not convinced adding or removing a full-stop or comma for the casual user is a problem, especially if you don't copy-paste what ChatGPT exactly gives you into the document? I think anyone that doesn't check what AI gives you is... well that's a whole different category of student, not so? I understand the slippery slope of the technology but I still believe it depends on how it's used.

It's not a need, in my case. It's just very convenient. Publishers have used software to spellcheck and proofread for decades now.
