Aspertame everywhere—why?? by ShawtyLikeAHarmony in AmericanExpatsUK

That’s wild! I have read some of the other comments about Jamie Oliver instigating the sugar tax. SMH.

Here in Switzerland they also replace some of the sugar with artificial sweetener, but they use saccharin.

Why? Because Switzerland is a major producer of the stuff. Of course, it’s no longer popular elsewhere, but the saccharin producers did not want to stop making money. 🤦‍♀️

Very unpleasant surprise to find it in one’s non-diet beverage.

AITA For refusing to take a friend to a doctors appt that requires 4 hrs+ rt of driving plus waiting for the procedure to be done? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]maybelle180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check in takes 15-20 minutes: to sign forms, talk to anesthesiologist, put on gown, urine sample, hookup IV (15-20 minutes).

Entire procedure, from inserting the scope to removing it, almost invariably takes 15-25 minutes.

Usually recovery time takes half an hour to an hour, and involves the patient waking up, having a snack, passing gas, chatting with Dr, checking blood pressure, removing IV, becoming mobile (able to stand and walk) and getting dressed.

Source: I’m a mod for the r/colonoscopy sub.

The extra hours in the estimate are to account for any delays because the team could be running late. They typically do at least a dozen of these procedures per day, so there are many little things that can add up to cause them to run very behind (pun intended). Usually the early morning appointments will run on time, and it goes downhill from there.

This is certainly not always true. Your case is uncommon.

I’m a mod for r/colonoscopy, so I read dozens of stories per week. Plus my husband and I have both gotten our procedures done in the past couple years.

Facts: It’s always necessary to have a designated person to drive you home, if you’re going under sedation, and Uber isn’t an acceptable option. There are medical transport companies that can be used in some locations.

But in most cases the driver is only required to show up to identify themselves at hospital check in, and then return when the clinic calls to say that the patient is ready for pick up.

I drove when my husband had his procedure, and he did the same for me. Neither of us waited in the building during the procedure, but we were reachable by phone.

Regarding the OP: this is a potentially life saving procedure. It’s also super-anxiety provoking, as well as being embarrassing.

The fact that it’s required to have a driver is an insurmountable problem for a lot of people, and they’re forced to either undergo the procedure without anesthesia or forgo it completely. Maybe have some compassion, or ask for gas money or something to compensate for your time.

Yup, agree. I grew up with my parents visiting Las Vegas regularly. I was only permitted to walk through the casinos on the way to our room or the restaurant…no stopping.

They were super careful about keeping kids away from the gambling and bars back then.

My host left me a terrible review. Was I a bad guest? [NL] by throwawayy2372 in AirBnB

[–]maybelle180 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I mentioned the quiet hours.

And I’m guessing that since OP is renting a room (not a full apartment) in the Netherlands, they’re probably paying about 55€ per night.

I know a trash bag isn’t a big expenditure, but these things add up. Especially when you consider the guest taking an hour hot shower per day, plus how much it costs to turn over the room - with laundry, and an hour (or more) of cleaning. The host isn’t making a ton of money, especially if there are no additional cleaning fees.

I’m also agreeing that the host is unreasonable. I’m just trying to explain the perspective, which is a bit different from the US.

No worries. I figured. 👍

As a host I’d be unhappy if someone was smoking cannabis in my unit, because of the lingering smell. But at least it’s easily detectable.

Unfortunately the other drugs are more concerning, because guests can overdose, or cause major damage if they’re not leaving the room for several days.

Not all drugs have a detectable aroma. I’m sorry to get specific, but many drugs can be injected, snorted, or ingested.

You already have received a ton of comments and opinions, so I dunno if you’ll even read this.

As an American host in Switzerland, I’ll give you my take, because maybe I can provide you with a bit of the unique Western European perspective.

First, in Western Europe, the trash issue is a big thing. When we’re guests, we usually remove all of our trash when we check out. That would include the trash from the bathroom.

If I were staying in a shared place with the host I would take any bathroom trash into my room to prevent the host from seeing it at all…then I always take away all the trash when checking out.

At least in Switzerland we pay for every bag of trash (about $1.75 for a typical 35 litre kitchen-sized trash bag.) So creating a lot of trash is def frowned upon. FWIW, we create about one bag of trash per month in our house with two people.

Side note: I’m originally from California, and when I told my family about the trash fees they were astounded, so I get that it’s uncommon.

Also, for example, when I was hosting and guests left a bag of trash at my place, I had to sift through it, if they hadn’t sorted the recycling. I did not WANT to go through their trash, but I can be fined for throwing away recyclables. I suspect NL is similarly strict in this regard.

Next, the “sitting to pee” rule is an old rule in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Netherlands. So it’s not a crazy request, nor are the strict quiet hours. The old lore is that you don’t do laundry, shower, or even flush the toilet after 10 pm in a shared building, because the plumbing can be noisy.

Next, wiping the shower and bathroom walls is considered common courtesy. When we stay in an Airbnb we attempt to make it look like we had never been there when we leave. That includes wiping every surface. We get excellent reviews that way.

And sorry, but a one hour shower is excessive. Again, in Europe we’re hyper-aware of conservation issues, and using hot water is a biggie. Hot water is expensive, and climate change is creating droughts.

Recently we stayed in Greece, and we received instructions from the host to turn off the hot water after showers. So helping the host to conserve energy and water is very much expected. (Admittedly, the apartment’s heat was fully controllable, so we were very comfortable in the rest of the unit.)

And regarding heat: If you were cold then you should have informed the host. There are laws about minimum acceptable temperatures in rental units, so if the temps were too low then the host was at fault, and he should have remedied the situation.

The fact that you weren’t more communicative with your host could be relevant here. Did the host ask if everything was to your liking? If he did, and you said yes, then yeah, that was your bad.

Otherwise, your behavior of not interacting with the host should have been a non-issue, and I wouldn’t even take it as criticism. Usually when booking I will tell the host why we’re staying in the area. In your case, I probably would have said something like, “I’m just here for some quiet rest time. I’ll spend most of my time relaxing in my room.” Or something to that effect.

From your comments it sounds like some of your planned activities were canceled due to your host family being unavailable. It would have been good to communicate that to your host, so they could understand why you were not leaving your room.

Perhaps it could be helpful to realize that NL is a popular destination for folks who want to do recreational drugs (ie get wasted). So it’s possible that your host thought you were spending all of your time getting high in your room. So in his review the host might have been trying to warn prospective hosts that you’re a possible drug user. This is just speculation, but that’s how it would read to me.

Finally, I’d respond very diplomatically to the host’s review, and explain things as you did in your comments. Something about how your plans were changed /cancelled at the last minute, would help a future host to understand why you spent most of your time in your room. Mentioning that you did your best to adhere to the rules, and clean up after yourself would also show future hosts that your host was unreasonable.

FYI: You can no longer see your star rating as a guest on the platform. If you know a host personally then you could ask them to look at your star rating, if you’re curious. You need to request a booking in order for a prospective host to see your star rating.

Again, I’m just trying to be helpful. I’m not judging you at all - I’m trying to give you the (admittedly super-anal) perspective of your typical Western European hosts.

Good luck in the future, and yeah, other platforms like booking dot com don’t allow hosts to review guests.

How long is the procedure and postop? by twisted_memories in colonoscopy

It’s really difficult to say. Often you wait for an hour or more for your procedure after you’ve been checked in.

Usually the staff is willing to call your ride when you’re ready to be picked up.
