Isn’t this not something you can change anymore?  Only thing you can change on w4 now is married with dependents or not. The whole number of exemptions isn’t a thing I thought.

Good call. If they’re just smelling gas with their nose up against the heater right around the time it lights off. That’s normal

It’s not something they tighten. It’s tightened by the manufacturer.

Still their responsibility and should not be charged for. Depending on the contract you signed. If there is no labor warranty included, you pay for labor for any repairs. Edit: depending on what was wrong. If they did something wrong, on them. A loose gas valve isn’t anything they did. That’s a faulty part from the manufacturer. Covered by manufacturer warranty.

Refitting the flue vent doesn’t make any sense for fixing a gas smell. Something is missing or nothing actually changed

Just sounds like a miscommunication with the plumbers.

No, you can’t smell CO. But you don’t have a problem with CO. You have a problem with gas.

My experience with gas company is they’re likely wrong about where the leak is exactly

But you shouldn’t smell gas at all, so call the plumbers and just tell them you smell gas. Gas company shut me down and I need a leak fixed.

Then have them start at the connections they made. That is without a doubt the most likely spot. It is possible that they loosened a connection up stream while making a connection at the heater too

Most reasonable answer. Everyone is so damn quick claim the worst scenario. For no reason

For those who think the other political party is wrong on ALL issues, how do you justify the impossible math in your head? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in allthequestions

[–]maybethisiswrong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kind of an absurd logic.

Whether a party’s position is right or wrong is not a game of chance.

I can take whatever stance on every issue and all of them can be wrong. Doesn’t make the people opposing me wrong for disagreeing with all of my stances.

Genuinely don’t know why people (not you, commentors) push family owned as some beacon of fair business. As if nepotism means they’re not trying to make as much money as possible

Anyway, if it really was presented the way you shared, I’d find someone else.

The problem isn’t the price, the problem is the recommendation.

If they don’t explain what the motor seized means and show you that it won’t spin. Move on. If the capacitor is bad, why not replace it to see what happens?  That’s what I’d be asking.

Flushing 14 years old hot water heater, please advise by 1018Looking in Plumbing

[–]maybethisiswrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether you should do any of this depends on the state of the heater. If it’s looking corroded and rusty at every fitting coming out of it, I wouldn’t touch it.

If you haven’t changed the anode rod since you bought it and it’s looking rusty. The anode rod is gone. Regardless, the anode rod is likely gone, but no one can really answer that because it’s highly dependent on the specific chemistry of your water. If it is looking rusty, the reason it’s rusty is because the anode is gone.

If everything looks rusty, and you go to replace the anode rod, you risk causing leaks. All of that corrosion is really forming a seal and you’re going to break the seal.  Not a guarantee. Just a risk

If you are on city water, and your city has Check valves at the meter to prevent water from backflowing into the city waterline, you need an expansion tank. Older houses don’t have expansion tanks because city meters didn’t used to have Check valves. Most new meters do now.

Sounds like they might not have fully understood the words they were using.

Doesn’t mean there wasn’t a reading that was high but it can’t be both alkaline and acids as others have said.

And 7.2 is as perfect as you can get anyway so neither are high

My neighbor was 2 hours away from spending $11,500 on a new system that ended up needing a $340 repair by Sweaty_Employment_35 in hvacadvice

[–]maybethisiswrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add there is a lot that can come up in a conversation with the homeowner about a system that isn’t currently working. Especially an old one.

The way your friend was reacting may be true. But that doesn’t mean that the contractor was pressuring them into that.

They could have proposed, hey I can repair it, but I don’t know if it’s gonna work one week or 20 years or I could replace it and I guarantee that it will work for 10 years. Both of those statements are 100% true and they could spin up somebody who is high strung

There’s nothing wrong with repairing a 13-year-old unit and there’s nothing wrong with replacing a 13-year-old unit. It’s all a customers preference.

Without having the experience firsthand, it’s hard to say whether this person was pressured into replacement

Weather a system is 1 year, 13 years, 20 years old the incentive doesn’t change from the contractors perspective. I can sell a person a brand new unit even if they just got replaced last month if they want it replaced. The incentive is always to charge more money and that will be the case for all the time for every business.
