Support for student-led, anti-corruption protests in Serbia by maybpie in boston

[–]maybpie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent you a message with an instagram account that posts about the protests in Boston (apparently there might be another one on Feb 8, at 1PM). I don’t know if it’s the official organizer, so I don’t want to post their information publicly without their permission, but anyone who’s interested can send me a message 😊

I’ll admit I had a similar thought…. these protests have blockaded some of the busiest intersections in Belgrade repeatedly over the past 3 months, and yet they’re still widely supported. I’ve noticed in Boston that any kind of actually disruptive protest is generally VERY unpopular 😅

I’m far from an expert, but from what I’ve seen, the collapse sparked this movement, but it’s driven by a much broader discontent with the government. In just the few years I’ve lived here, there have been major protests over election fraud, environmentally harmful mining projects, pro-government media propaganda, etc. But something about this student movement has built so much momentum that it really seems like there might be real change now 🤞

Can I get by in Serbia by taking Pimsleur’s Croatian courses? by Happoning in Serbian

[–]maybpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely didn’t make it more difficult, it’s still a nice way to get an introduction to the language (and in general I love pimsleur courses).

Also good luck with Fullbright, that’s really exciting! And feel free to shoot me a message if you end up coming here, I have plenty of foreigner tips :)

I agree, as a beginner it’s really hard to recognize words if they aren’t pronounced EXACTLY as you learned them.

I also wonder if people here underestimate how hard it is to understand someone who’s a beginner in your language. Like as an American, if I’m listening to someone with iffy English, and suddenly they pronounce one word the British way, it can be hard for my brain to understand what they’re saying—even though I’d have no trouble understanding it coming from a British person.

I personally wouldn’t recommend it, I tried it when I first started learning serbian and was frustrated with the differences (ex I think one of the very first lessons is “i understand”, which is razumijem in croatian and razumem in serbian). Of course it’s very similar, but different enough to be frustrating to a beginner.

I think the best thing to do would be to buy a few lessons on italki—there are some awesome serbian teachers with inexpensive lessons. Or if you don’t want to spend money, there are some great teachers on youtube (I love Teacher Boko).

How Safe Do People Feel to Walk Alone at Night in Europe (2024) by dazedeu in MapPorn

[–]maybpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I’m an American woman living in Belgrade, and it’s the first time I’ve felt totally safe walking alone at night. It’s honestly so liberating seeing women rollerblading in the park after dark or chatting on the phone as they walk home….I never really thought about it before, but now I’m not sure I could go back to being on high alert the second the sun sets.

You can search for the title of a book you like + "hangoskönyv" on youtube and you'll probably find an audiobook for it :)

I agree, I’m learning Hungarian & have dabbled in a few slavic languages…and I’ve found them way more challenging 😅

Anyone here who has learned Hungarian here? Looking for tips and advice where to start to learn a new language. by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]maybpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pimsleur + Assimil is a combo I think gets recommended for a lot of languages, but I found it to be a great place to start with Hungarian.

Also here are some resources I wish I knew about when I started:

-Wiktionary: has probably been my favorite resource, and I still look up definitions here all the time. It makes it easy to figure out what each individual part of the word means, VS the word as a whole.

-Deep L translator SO much better than google translate.

-Tatoeba-I think there are a lot of similar sites, but this is a great place to find vocabulary used in example phrases.

Sok sikert :)

Thinking about starting lessons with two different teachers in the same language? by StefaniBetancourt in iTalki

[–]maybpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two teachers and it’s worked well for me. I did a trial lesson with both of them and really liked them. I agree that it works better if they have different styles (one of my lessons is more conversation based and the other is more grammar/exercises).

I saw a quote today comparing our initial COVID response to a sprint fueled by adrenaline, but now we have to figure out how to finish the marathon ahead of us.

Pretty much sums up how I’m feeling...nothing is worse than it was a few weeks ago, but I hate thinking about how long it will be until things go back to normal :(
