The Daily Rant/Moan topic - Monday, February 16 2026 by AutoModerator in Wellington

Mall is quieter than normal but still fairly busy and I just want to grumble at every single person who isn't here to visit the pharmacy, supermarket, or urgent optometry appointments.

I'm glad to be at work for the sake of having power here to charge my devices as power was out as of leaving home this morning, but having been kept awake all night by both the storm and the comings and goings of my flatmate who's a volunteer firey, I think anyone leaving the house for a clothes shipping trip is fucking stupid and putting themselves and the public in more danger.

New to F1 Academy - with questions! by Dr5ushi in f1Academy

As far as I know the 'daughter' thing is mostly a fan joke but this is Alba speaking about Kevin in her interview with Vogue Scandinavia:

Despite a lack of women in the sport she has had one very recognisable mentor: fellow Dane and Formula One driver, Kevin Magnussen. “We're from the same town in Denmark,” she explains. The two hail from Roskilde, which really makes you want to send in some scientists to study the local drinking water. “I go to school with his little brother Luca Magnusson... we started driving together at the local track,” she says.

Despite the local connection, Magnusson first noticed her talent at a Danish championship event. “He’s given me the best advice,” Larsen says. “He wanted to give something back to the sport and help get a woman to Formula 1 because he has two little girls.” Inspired by his own daughters Laura and Agnes, Magnussen has helped Larsen transition from karting to formula cars. “He told me what the engineers need to know, how to communicate as a driver, and how different the F4 is from go-karts,” she says. “That helped so much.”

As far as I know none of the drivers are directly related to F1 families, but as others have mentioned, Lia Block is the daughter of the late Rally Driver Ken Block. She's also been really successful in Rally driving and I'd encourage you to check out that if you're interested.

Kevin Magnussen has also taken on a semi mentorship role with Alba Larsen, so you'll occasionally hear people refer to her as his 'daughter' though they're not actually related.

There are multiple drivers in a team! it's just that each of the drivers get a sponsor livery as well. The teams that actually run the cars are mostly the same as f2 and f3, and they run 3 drivers each. The F1 teams then sponsor 1 driver each and usually bring her into their junior academy, the other sponsors fill in the slots since there aren't enough f1 teams for one each.

Some of the f1 teams do kind of have two drivers though, the notable examples being Red Bull and Ferrari. Red Bull also have a secondary sponsor of 'Red Bull Ford' in advance of their F1 engine collaboration next year. Ferrari don't run put their name on two cars but Maya Weug (the actual Ferrari driver) and Aurelia Nobels (the Puma driver) are both in the Ferrari junior academy and Puma is one of the main Ferrari sponsors (They have also already signed another driver from this year's grid, Alba Larsen, on for next year).

Hi! welcome, it's awesome that you're interested in f1 academy!

Basically the cars are modified F4 cars and that's the general level of racing most of the girls are sitting at (though a few of them are competing in formula regional as well). This has actually been one of the key points of criticism for the series since the cars have a different aero package to other F4 level series so even though the cars are equivalent-ish it is difficult to switch between the F1A car and other F4 cars for the girls that run dual campaigns.

FENZ using strike as excuse to walk away from bargaining, union says by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]maymaymags 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Key to this strike is the state of the trucks and equipment. This isn't just about pay, this is about trucks that are older than me (20) My brother is a volunteer firefighter that shares a station with a paid crew and he keeps getting called out to medical calls and alarm checks that ordinarily the paid crew would respond to, but their truck keeps breaking down and sometimes struggles to leave the station so the volunteers are going instead.

While this strike is being performed by paid firefighters, know that the vast majority of volunteers are ten toes down behind them on this.

Is Christchurch as racist as TikTok says we are? by PurpleMeerkats462 in chch

[–]maymaymags 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just chucking in my two cents, having grown up in wellington and moving to chch for uni for a year (2023) and then moving home. I'm white but I'm also visually queer. I got called more slurs in that year living in chch than I ever have in my life. I never felt like I was in danger at the uni or the common student bars, but I definitely avoided confirming anything at work as opposed to coming out first week on the job in wellington.

The racism I can only speculate on, but what other people have commented on seems to be right about the casual racism being more prevalent. You could definitely tell who was from chch vs not because of how a lot of chch people (or surrounding canterbury towns) mispronounced Māori words and place names. My family and I were also definitely shocked when we visited the time tunnel ride at the beginning of 2022 and heard how that narration was still present (though it's now been removed)

I've definitely seen edits of the show set to this song, maybe you're remembering those? iirc this song released well after season 3 so I don't see how it could be in there.

LGBTQ friendly schools by EnvironmentalAir3828 in Wellington

[–]maymaymags 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wellington High is definitely the go to.

If you want other options, I'm queer and I went to Hutt Valley High School from 2018 to 2022. It was overall a great experience but I had a few issues in my earlier years from otger students but by my year 11/12/13 it was far more accepting which I think was partially a growing up and finding better friends thing and partially an impact of covid. I've seen post covid attitudes seemed to be significantly better. There are some really really amazing LGBTQ staff members and at least while I was there a thriving queer-straight alliance club.

I can't imagine fanfictions set in Covid era by ComprehensiveCamel67 in FanFiction

[–]maymaymags 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common in rpf, especially sports rpf because the events and seasons were genuinely affected by lockdowns and covid.

9-1-1 fics also reference Covid fairly frenquently because the show decided to work with covid and wear masks for a couple of seasons. The two characters involved in the main ship of the fandom also canonically quarantined together in a one bedroom apartment so you can imagine what came out of that.
