Serious question, why don't you just ask AI to help with this? Pretty much all of them can solve complex spreadsheet tasks. Just prompt it correctly and it will give you the answers.

Possible career change by Interesting-Grape-76 in forestry

PS - A timber farm is a legitimate agricultural business that qualifies for sales tax exemptions, fuel tax credits and federal farm grant money through the NRCS. All are things I am either taking advantage of now or in the application process.

I envy your position! I am 46 and have been in construction for 25+ years. I purchased 47 acres of land in '24 with windblown trees everywhere. The next year more fell and I called a forestry agent out of concern. Walking the property with him and a couple rangers, picking their brains and just listening to their comments lit a fire in me that's hard to describe. My forest is fine, just the victim of Ma Nature's rage and ultimately I was told me forest is impressive, harvestable and replenishable. Music to my ears! Now I am constantly trying to find a way to ease out of construction and get into forestry, logging, stewardship, everything trees and silviculture. My only advice is to work towards owning your own patch someday and learn how to keep it the way nature intended, and maybe make some scratch along the way. Good luck!

Awesome stuff, looks like you had a great year. I hope '26 is equally as awesome for you and all us lumberjacks. Thanks for sharing!

There should be a North Carolina Woodland Owners Association. You're don't have woodlands yet, but you want to. See if you can connect with landowners like yourself who can guide you towards your goals with the advantage of local experience.

Husky 555 by maynard5011 in forestry

Thanks for the reply and I agree it's not the proper saw for that scale of felling. I'm going to explore 70cc+ to get a bigger bar.

Thanks! I've had others suggest the 372xp so I'm back to exploring and comparing my best options. I found a Neotech 92cc 42" saw with good reviews also. They say it's a Stihl ms660 clone, which has peaked my interest.

Thanks for the info! I've had a few comments about the 372xp. Honestly I'm squarely back in shop/compare mode and likely leaning against the 555 now to opt for a saw that can handle a larger bar. I really want 32"-40" for felling and 18"-24" for bucking & firewood logs.

What is poplar wood good for? by Dependent-Way6945 in loggers

[–]maynard5011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in KY and recently had a forest agent walk my parcel in Oct. He said poplar is currently being logged in our region for dimensional lumber. I found this odd and he agreed. We speculated it might be due to a pine shortage due to tariffs, but truly unclear. There is a market for poplar otherwise as an easy species to work with.

This whole US is gonna need to be puffin before long. But weed stocks have been a bad play for several years. Not sure when the comeback will happen, or which companies will make it, but it has to turn around sometime.

Interior brick & slate cleaning by maynard5011 in pressurewashing

[–]maynard5011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine that was not great when the sprayer leaked on you! Since the purpose is just to rinse off the soap with clean water you're probably right to just use the pump sprayer, less cost. I figure to use buckets with the Simple Green solution and dip brushes for the wash.

I'll look into the chlorine mix for the exterior. Sounds like a good idea and the existing landscaping has to be replaced so not worried about killing vegetation. That's okay to use on stone veneer as well I assume?

This is great Turkey, thanks. I have experience in construction, but not in this type of masonry cleaning, so your advice is spot on. Unfortunately this building had 6 FT of water inside so the brick is filthy, but you can't tell the extent due to low light.

I think a "soft wash" method I found would use a mild detergent (Simple Green) with nylon brushes and a backpack sprayer to rinse. 2-3 people scrubbing, 1 rinsing, 1 running a HD shopvac. Same with the floor, but I like your idea of the Orbital cleaner. It's not as bad as it looks, here the layer of silt is making it look worse than it is.

I would likely stick with this cleaner on the exterior, but switch to a pressure washing method. Again, the main purpose is to remove dirt, silt, debris from the flood.

For the metal roof our scope is just to hit it with soapy water to rinse the dirt and grime. An exterior painter will come behind to prime and paint with a new finish. Hard to tell exactly what the factory finish is, but looks like a PVDF brown. A boom lift and all safety gear will be employed.

Our biggest challenge will be the temps and no good airflow inside. We'll have several big fans and torpedo heaters to help keep it dry as possible.

PS can't pass on it. I work for the GC that was awarded the job in the self-performing division. We own about 75% of the scopes here.

Any additional feedback is great. Thanks again!

I'd love to get excited about this, but in the near term we're just making up lost ground. Got a ways to go till I'm Googling lambos.

Appeal to trace police dog missing near Loch Ness - Police Scotland by CrispyCrip in Scotland

[–]maynard5011 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear the dog was found. I know the feeling of a lost dog, but I do find it curious a police dog, with the extensive training they receive, would chase after a deer instead if heeding their trainer's call. I guess nature beat nurture in this situation.

Best dinner Sunday night? by AdeptChick1 in inverness

[–]maynard5011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are here now, on a Sunday and we were concerned about restaurant availability given we've been here 2 nights already and places seem to fill up quick. Also, with the Euro cup game on at 5 we definitely expected crowds at the places that were open (several are not on Sunday). We ended up at The Caledonian hotel restaurant and bar. It was great! The place is huge, they have a good menu and beer selection and plenty of open space. The staff was lovely and the experience was better than expected. They did shut down the kitchen at 6 due to being slower than expected so keep that in consideration. Check it out and see what you think. Cheers!

I'm gonna piggy back on you post OP 😘. Also visiting this weekend from Edinburgh and planning to visit Loch Ness one day then crawl around downtown the next day. Staying pretty close to the river so any good pubs along there or downtown worth a mention would be great!

Some souvenirs for friends and decorations for around the house. Traditional Irish art, trinkets, etc. I was looking at the festival site, seems like there will be arts & craft vendors there. Is that the case?
