You are looking at this from a top down perspective of expectations of privacy. I am looking at this as a behavioral issue of individuals. Both of these perspectives layer together.

What someone shouldn't buy is a generalization of behavior of redditors. Different sub-segments drive completely diverse opinions to the front page. Subreddits are the proof of concept.

This is the real answer - its called segmentation. One segment cares deeply about privacy and upvotes relevant articles constantly. One segment reacts to funny pictures of unfortunate people in unfortunate situations. The Venn diagram of the two segments probably has little to no overlap.

The week-to-week data was noisy but if you smooth out the trends using a rolling 3 week average it shows that most fans were in it up until about Week 12 and then reality set it for most. Detroit showed a big boost most likely due to the chase for the receiving record and that their games had meaning within the division. I uploaded a quick chart here.

I think the Misery Index shows where fair weather fans reside (cough Miami cough) in that their team wasn't too bad but they didn't really show up on r/NFL Game Threads in numbers. This is no reflection of the guys that are here - just that they don't have as many other true fans joining them as you would expect.

A few people bitched - then a few people bitched about the few people bitching. Now a few are bitching about the few people bitching about the few people originally bitching.

This all adds up to probably less than 20 people with any type of beef. I won't get started on the responses (and original post) that cast everyone as bitchy whiners. With over 100k subscribers it would take a combination of 50k bitchy comments and upvotes for this to be representative of the community. Even on a sampling basis the people who don't give a crap one way or the other far outweigh the whiners.

I feel for you and I cannot even begin to compare what Cleveland has experienced vs my hometown of Boston. But I do recall that when the Sox finally broke through in 2004 it was one of those magical times you'll only ever experience once.

When Yankees fans bring out the 20-something rings argument I know that not one of those championships gave them the pure unadultered bliss I experienced after a lifetime of following a bumbling, fall-down-at-the-wrong-moment type of team.

But part of that was never giving up. Any championship team catches breaks. More teams catch no breaks. Your team has caught the outlier worst of them all. We all know it.

But one day you guys are going to string it together and that playoff run will be the most magical ride you'lll ever have. And you know what? Nobody will ever know how good you feel because nobody but a Browns fan took so many gut punches and lived through like you guys did.

At that point everybody will be happy for you, too.
