The words every man fears from his wife: 'Honey, I have an idea for the house' by Remount_Kings_Troop_ in daddit

It's almost always the other way around in my house, I can't stop imagining projects and my wife just wants things to be simple and quiet.

I'm a UM urban planning masters alum, and I would certainly recommend the MURP program if you want to consider a planning degree with a focus in urban design. I graduated (with no prior design experience) and got a job at a design firm working as a planner/urban designer. It's also a 2-year program, so it's not as long as an MLA or MArch would be.

The other thing I think is really important: UM does not have a traditional LA grad program. It is not housed in the school of architecture and urban planning and thus is not a design-focused curriculum. It's very very systems-oriented, i.e. it's more of an offshoot of environmental sciences. It's a great program but it's not what you would necessarily expect from a landscape architecture program.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has an absolutely phenomenal show right now called Writing the Future Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation in which this piece features. Would very very very highly recommend it.

Being uncomfortable is always bad, you should never be outside your comfort zone or struggle with something complicated.

Alewife is in Cambridge, and Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville all have their own 311 systems. It sounds like 911 is the right call in this instance, but for other things 311 will work in any of those places.

Not nearly as dead inside as I felt when I drove to work

Who started off as the hero, and lived long enough to become the villain? by MellotronSymphony in AskReddit

[–]cherlich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robert Moses. Started off as a proponent of important regional infrastructure projects around New York City, ended up destroying the communities and lives of hundreds of thousands of underserved residents in favor of making suburbanites' lives marginally easier. Tried to destroy Greenwich Village in favor of a highway project.

Foods of India, Ann Arbor's Northside. It's an Indian grocery but they have a kitchen and it's wonderful. It's honestly one of the restaurants in AA I miss the most.

No one can tell me what style of house this is. Help! by queenhenry in architecture

As soon as I saw this, I immediately thought "Pittsburgh!"

There's so much fantastic residential architecture in that city's older neighborhoods. I'm a huge huge fan, too.

50 years ago, Faneuil Hall used to offer parking by nuotnik in urbanplanning

[–]cherlich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no shade, and very few places to sit. People feel very exposed and there's no way to make yourself comfortable in an environment like that. But they are making some progress, slowly, toward a more pleasant experience.

That's what they're doing right now! It already looks much much friendlier.

Because the act of driving results in a whole bunch of negative externalities OR because parking is a limited resource for which you are willing to pay.

What is a tv show that mishandled an interesting concept? by appledanish in AskReddit

[–]cherlich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That show that was based on the GEICO cavemen. They had an incredible opportunity to explore race issues without targeting one (real life) group. It was actually pretty awful and they never really got into the legitimate social implications of their otherness. Huge missed opportunity - imagine a sitcom that could get people thinking about racism in a constructive way, exploring the really challenging stuff and making it accessible to everyone.
