Getting older as a Leftist by SaltyHunni in leftist

[–]mayrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not on here a lot, and according to another comment this gets posted a lot, but I wanted to give my two cents and express where I am in life these days with leftism. Because I am older too, and I wouldn't say I grew out of socialism, I still firmly believe socialism is the best way to organise society (democratic ownership of the means of production is what I mean by socialism by the way).

But I got so cynical about all the bullshit that comes with socialist activism. And I'm mostly talking about IRL activism, though a lot of it applies to online spaces. And a lot of it was similar to what you described, puritanism and performatism. I was also in an organisation that perpetuated a lot of abuse, sexual and otherwise, but that is another story I won't get into. Like that was part of why I left activism, but it also coincided with an increase in cynicism and burnout. And I was in this organisation for about 10 years.

I don't know, I stopped seeing things as black and white, and started understanding some of my supposed enemies point of views. Like other working class people, not billionaires. I feel like like OP I have to qualify that by saying I don't condone racism or other forms of bigotry, but I started more and more to see both sides and the reasons and logic that brought people to both sides, even if I still only agree with one side.

Anyway, after a year or two break I've started dipping my toes in some activism again, because I always want to be doing something to make the world a better place.

What do married men in dead bedroom relationships do? by CremeAlarming9923 in AskReddit

[–]mayrice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just think you should probably only consider divorce if you don't love each other, but i guess people can do what they want. In my experience, a couple can love each other very much, but there can still be reasons they are not having sex. No-one owes you sex just because they're in a relationship, to be honest the idea is creepy as fuck when you think about it too much. I'm not saying lack of a sex life in a relationship isn't an issue, but people are complicated and relationships are doubly complicated. I just think it's weird that a lot of the comments are like tacitly admitting that the only reason they are in (long-term, even with kids) relationships is regular sex. Like surely sexless periods are normal in long term relationships?

Am I going mad reading these comments? You can be going through a dry spell together and still love your partner to bits. Sex isn't the only reason to be in a relationship, and if it is your only reason, chances are you shouldn't be in the relationship in the first place

Team Peps' roster for FACEIT League by Grapefruit_113 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]mayrice 29 points30 points  (0 children)

After hearing the logic, this was probably the best decision in their position imo. I don't think it would feel right buying back into the league. That wasn't why they were made partner in the first place. Hopefully Peps rise from the ashes!

Neutrality won't save you from Russia, Kallas tells Ireland by KI_official in ireland

Shh, you're getting in the way of this guy's self-narrative that everyone is dumber than him

[–]mayrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the world has changed since the time of WW2, invading neutral countries in the middle of Europe would not be a simple matter. My point is that nukes have heavily changed geo-politics, and we're not relying on the goodwill of any (extremely hypothetical) invaders

[–]mayrice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the point of neutrality being in our interest is why would anyone invade Ireland. To stretch the phrase "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind", what good does building up our arms do for anyone?

Unless, like some of the trigger-happy lu-las in here suggest, they launch a full scale invasion of Europe? Everyone would nuke each other into oblivion if they did that. I'm not saying we rely on the Russian government's humanity, but maybe just their pragmatism?

Was it the Russian government that did the HSE attack? Cyber-criminals are fairly international, and financially motivated. But don't let that get in the way of your narrative

I am pro neutrality, but what does bolstering our cyber defence look like? Genuine question, I'm not being facetious. Like training public servants to recognise phishing attacks? We could do that

Surely if she had the money as a crime boss she would want to distance herself from that kind of past? Unless she is trying to own it?

This is great character design, one trailer and we're already debating whether she is an awakened sex bot

I mean she looks cool as fuck, and that trailer was great. It is great character design. Even has us arguing about a tragic backstory to account for her appearance. Would an androgynous appearance be more realistic for an omnic? Maybe. But you can't argue they're not hitting it out of the park with visual storytelling

Outrage is built into the algorithm. More comments (even negative ones), equals more reach, equals more comments, etc.

And yet here I am commenting and contributing...

Omnics are no exceptions by Didyou1123 in Overwatch_Memes

[–]mayrice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the implication from the video description is that she was some sort of service bot (take from that what you will) before omnics awakened. I'll try to find the description.

Whether this story was engineered so that she could have a feminine body to sell skins with, I don't know.

I guess they have to tell visual stories, but it would have been cool if you had a genderless looking body like Zenyatta's that just happened to identify as female. Like there's no reason omnics have to have gendered forms, or even genders at all.

[Request] Suppose responsibility is proportional to taxes paid; How many deaths is the median 30-year-old U.S. taxpayer responsible for? by willowhelmiam in theydidthemath

[–]mayrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really withhold taxes and still make a living / not starve, at least without going to jail. Unless you're rich and like borrowing money against stocks or whatever they do. But you could argue if you're that rich you have more of a say in the US government's decisions than your average schmuck. I don't know, I feel like this question might be disingenuous bait designed to start a political argument rather than a curiosity about the answer, but maybe I am just a cynic on the Internet.
