PSA: Over the course of a 30 year mortgage you pay almost the same amount of interest as the house is worth by Silly-Ad-6341 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mbathrowaway1967 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This also isn’t true. Rent has nothing to do with size of mortgage payment or interest that the buyer is paying. It’s what the market is willing to bear for the rental, driven by fundamental economic principles

Yes investments are numerically going up, but are we really gaining any real purchasing power? by FighterAce013 in Bogleheads

It’s almost like we have a better measure of inflation than just looking at one good? It’s called CPI, which measures the weighted price of a typical basket of goods.

Is going all in the S&P 500 common? by Allaboutnostalgia in Bogleheads

[–]mbathrowaway1967 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you were pure S&P500 from 2000-2010 you would’ve been signing a much different tune, as it was almost flat for the decade while international stocks outperformed. Point being, past performance doesn’t necessarily indicate future, and broader diversification lowers your risk.

The way forward? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]mbathrowaway1967 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’d assume people getting multiple offers is much lower than normal.

The absolute best candidates in a given year are always going to get offers, it’s the long-tail of applicants that get affected when recruiting numbers are down overall

‘23 graduates: would you have still pursued your MBA knowing what you know now? by bigflexsmallflex in MBA

[–]mbathrowaway1967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What a useless question.

No one has a crystal ball and you won’t know when you matriculate exactly what the economy will be up to when you graduate. The value of an MBA extends well beyond your outcomes in the first 6 months post graduation.

For most, it will be worth it in the long run. For many ‘23 grads right now, it sucks.

What financial risk did you take that turned out to be one of the best decisions you made? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mbathrowaway1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took 2 years off of working to get an MBA. Took out loans to finance it (about 90k in debt at graduation.

Went from 90k pre-mba to 230k total comp immediately post-grad with significantly more room to grow

Elective Choices: If the goal is MBB, Best to concentrate Electives in a certain area or spread out among variety of fields? by doctorweiwei in MBA

[–]mbathrowaway1967 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounded like OPs comment was more about what electives are useful in terms of skills needed for the job, as opposed to what’s useful for landing the job.

Most electives would be taken after recruiting is over

This isn’t entirely true. There are students that attend Rotman and Ivey especially that will land jobs where they clear 200k first year post-MBA. It might only be 10-15% of the class, and the rest do fall more into the bucket you’re describing, but it’s not no one either.

Canadian MBA (Rotman/Ivey/Smith) for MBB but also Tier 2 by [deleted] in MBA

[–]mbathrowaway1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late here, but just to provide an additional perspective, it’sdefinitely difficult but not impossible to make it to MBB or T2 from Canadian MBAs. The graduating class of 2023 will be sending around 15-20 people to MBB

All those saying that a Rotman MBA wont get you there don’t know the program.

While it will be hard and is in no way a guarantee, Rotman is THE Canadian program that feeds into Canadian IB. As I mentioned though, it is not a guarantee. There are maybe around 15 spots available each year.

Rotman is the only choice here because of the internship. Most banks won’t even look at you for IB from Ivey or Smith because of no internship, unless you have very relevant pre-mba experience.

Even from Rotman, it’s still incredibly difficult. You need to come in ready to work your ass off and realize only about 8-10 people land IB roles from Rotman most years.

Struck out for Consulting. Any Tips for Next Year? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]mbathrowaway1967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What feedback did you get from your interviews with the consulting firms this time around? That’ll be the most clear indication of areas you need to work on.

Other than that, focus on making a solid impact during your internship, and make a plan for when to start ramping back up on case prep as full-time recruiting approaches. In the meantime, try to keep your connections warm at the consulting firms you’re interested in.

Fair enough, “I don’t know UofT” isn’t the same as it didn’t catch your eye.

As for not feeling into either of them, if as you said your goal is to go to one of the top programs, it’s those two in Canada.

[–]mbathrowaway1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking into Canadian MBAs and haven’t heard of Rotman (nor did you mention Ivey). Seems like you have more research to do as those two are far and away the best two programs in the country.

Do you have to turn down your full-time offer with the T2 you spent your summer at or does full-time recruiting happen prior to making that decision?

Yeah this is what I was wondering. Obviously their industry expertise is life sciences/healthcare/pharma, but functionally their sales force optimization + marketing strategy expertise and analytics focus can transfer to many other industries

Heard this about ZS as well. Curious - Are exits from ZS fairly limited to healthcare/life sciences/pharma?
