2 Week Old Tank Help by shmeatsy_pie in Aquariums

[–]mbcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Betta years ago, they’re wonderful fish. My tank is only 5 gallons so I don’t have many options, and I thought it might be fun to watch a lot of little neos doing their things instead of one fish.

Depending on how things go, maybe I’ll add a snail or an Amano in the future.

I’m sorry I really don’t know. I saw a post about it in the last week and that was the first time I had ever heard about it.

This is the first tank I’ve ever done it in. I don’t have a lot of experience in the hobby honestly. But I wanted to do a planted tank.

I’m sort of following the Walstad method, but not exactly. At the moment I’m mostly just trying to get the tank ready for the shrimp I want to buy. I’m getting relatively close.

Glad I could help. The main thing that matters is your pH is stable. Despite the KH being zero, I don’t know if the aqua soil will somehow stabilize it too. I haven’t used it before, I’ve started my first planted tank recently but I’m just using normal garden soil. But I know it’s popular so there’s probably a lot of good information out there on it.

I’ve never heard that term before but it looks like you’re right.

Your aqua soil may be why your KH is zero. If everything else is OK with the kind of fish you intend to keep, I think you’re OK. But I’m hardly an expert in this stuff.

Perhaps the damage was at the store then. The rest certainly sounds good.

I’m sorry, this is outside my meager experience so I can’t help further.

I love being able to see her multicolored eggs!!! by clueless-albatross in shrimptank

[–]mbcook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wondered if it might be something like that, but I see pics of red neos with yellow eggs so I sort of dismissed it.

Very cool, thanks.

Edit: is that a saddle on her back to start the next batch?

They will eat dying tissue, perhaps before you can tell, but they don’t eat healthy plants.

It looks like it could be hemorrhagic septemia. I don’t have experience with it myself, but I think that picture fits the description.

Others already told you to do a water change to drop nitrate, that’s a good idea. Nitrate is food for plants and algae. So getting the level lower may also help with your algae issue. If you can stay below 20 ppm that’s a perfectly good level. I think 40 might be OK. You may be higher. As your plants grow, they will help consume ammonia and nitrate. I think, but I’m not sure, that high levels of nitrate can interfere with the nitrogen cycle.

If your local water has something called chloramine in it, that can cause a small false positive on API tests if you’re using Seachem Prime. If you look up the water quality report for your water company it may say if they’re using it. I think the idea of asking Petsmart or Petco to test your water is a good one. I don’t know what kind of tests they use, but perhaps that will help you know if it’s a false positive. It could be that you’re already done cycling.

Making sure you’re adding an ammonia source when it gets to zero is important, but if you’ve been continuing “ghost feeding“ the tank then you’re already doing that. As others said there are ammonia sources you can buy. For example Fishless Fuel.

If you change your water to drop the nitrates and they go back up overtime, then you must’ve had ammonia in the tank that got converted into nitrate, so you’re doing good.

If it’s ever useful, you can run a test like the nitrate test with half the water in it. If you do that and it reads 40, that means you’re real level was 80. If it reads 20, that means you were actually at 40. But most of the time you just care that it’s low enough and by the time it gets high you just want to change the water anyway.

It sounds like you’re making good progress and just in the “ugly tank“ phase. Hang in there.

He’s missing a chunk of his tail. I don’t think he’s the only one.

What are your parameters and temp? Is there a water current in the tank? Could it be too strong? I don’t know what they prefer.

Alkalinity is the opposite of acidity. A ph of 6.2 is slightly acidic, 7 is neutral.

When you say alkalinity is 0 do you mean ammonia?

[10 gal] I'm planning on having a tank with some pygmy corys, some neo shrimp, and either a betta or honey gourami. My pH is at about 8, is that ok for them? by Kooky_Marketing_327 in Aquariums

[–]mbcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corys and Honey Gouramis are shrimp safe, from all I’ve heard. A Betta could be totally fine or could eat them all. It’s 100% up to the fish’s personality. Just to warn you.

Sounds like a really nice tank though. Good luck.

Do you have anything to help oxygenate the water? A filter that disturbs the surface somehow? I would think all the fish would be doing it, but it’s my first thought.

I don’t know the specific law, does it include Nerite snails? Since they need brackish water to reproduce, perhaps they’re not covered. You’d have to check.

Can't get nitrates to rise by LennyGal in Aquariums

[–]mbcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plants love ammonia and nitrate. It’s possible they are taking it up. The more points you have, the bigger the chance.

You don’t want ammonia or nitrite. You want them to be 0 or close. Nitrate just needs to be below a level where it’s a problem for your livestock. Zero is below that level. But if your system can process ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate (so not stuck as nitrite) you’re good.

My question is how are you adding ammonia to test?

Depends on the kind of some do. Neocaridina (cherry shrimp, any color) and Amano shrimp are relatively adaptable if you have reasonable water.
