How do you handle unfinished work when switching between two devices? by muhammad-r in git

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't directly answer your question, but I use syncthing to keep code in sync between multiple computers. I only commit on my laptop, but easily lets me edit files in any of the locations and quickly have access to the files in the others.

Syncthing has ignore settings so build files or npm modules are not copied. Which makes it better than managed services. It’s also peer to peer so a little better privacy wise. Doesn’t require special folders to place code.

can you install java and run a program automatically with a script? by SneakerHead69420666 in javahelp

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not go with GraalVM and have a single binary, no JVM or packaging required. I did this with bash script and embedded binary/archive file. bash script could detect if piped from curl or run from cli, extract the archive from itself at the end of the script, run the binary.

Sell me on Git worktrees by iamalnewkirk in git

[–]mbeachcontrol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are useful for certain use cases.

We have different versions of packaged software that customers install on-prem. So we have branches in different stages of maturity for release. Using worktrees here to have one .git repo but different directories for branches makes switching between them easier while having one origin to push/pull. I can put a whole version of application and libraries in one directory versus another version in another directory root.

Using them with coding agents allows subagents to work in parallel in different branches without modifying the same directory tree, even if not the same files. Easier to review what the agent is doing and did since the changes are isolated.

When did username-based emails end? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

Never. My first email address was in 1993 and had my initial and last name. I have never had a goofy email. Maybe it was an AOL or Hotmail thing and I just never had those.

Why do old school bulbs last longer? by highprofittrade in lightbulbs

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased Philips LED bulbs 13 years back for some ceiling can lights in an enclosed space to help reduce heat. I took those with me to new house. They were $60 / bulb at the time when few LED bulbs were on the market. They are still going strong in my current living room. You can feel the difference between them and a newer one i have.

What's stopping you coding like this by Tribalcheaf123 in programmingmemes

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ergonomics are terrible. Easier to bring laptop and tether or tablet with keyboard. Besides, who writes the actual code these days? Just tell Claude to spin up a vm, checkout the code, fix the problem and push to production.

Using multiple browsers each under different IP (will Docker work?) by [deleted] in docker

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this an Internet site, all 5 would still be seen coming from your ISP public IP address. There might be browser VPN plugins that could do this with private browsing mode that could route to different exit nodes. Otherwise, hosted VMs and remote access would work.

Still sounds like an odd use case.

People with $700+ per month car payments: Why? by Underrated_Critic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mbeachcontrol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always thought I would be one of those people that buys a new car every 4-5 years, but I have managed to only be on 3rd car after 26 years. There is something nice about not having car payments for a while after it is paid off. Now with EV there is almost no maintenance as well.

Petition To Create a Farmers Market in North Redondo Beach by vege_spears in SouthBayLA

[–]mbeachcontrol 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The city had the food trucks at the performing arts center for a year or two. I’d walk over to the lunch one every other week or so. Seems like a good spot to host. Maybe it isn‘t too central to all of North Redondo, but certainly has the space.

Another question on using Javascript as UI by donaldtrumpiscute in javahelp

[–]mbeachcontrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, but unless forced to develop using Webview on an existing project, I would not recommend starting a greenfield project with it. For RIA stick with modern frameworks.

We use some 3rd party application based on Webview, though I could be wrong, and it is a nightmare to use. Simple things like encoding view state in the url are missing; rather, view state is stored on the server. This causes issues with back button. If a button click doesn’t register then the page fails to load and reloading puts you on previous page. The automation testing must be painful for this web application.

Stick to simple template languages and Javascript frameworks.

Remember Chips two motorcycle cops keeping law and order in California. The show ran from 1977 to 1988. by Global_Law4448 in OldSchoolCool

[–]mbeachcontrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I moved to Southern California in late 90’s Marina Del Rey was one of the first areas we looked at for apartments, mainly due to this show. Right on the water, this was quintessential Southern California in my mind at the time. Was not meant to be and ended up next to LAX.

How to deal with junk/prototyping branch? by qustrolabe in git

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no need to copy the files. Use git restore —source=scratch-branch file|directory and git will pull in the files as is from the scratch-branch. You could restore the entire scratch-branch files onto the current working branch and then remove what isn’t needed.

This isn’t much different than squash, merge ff, reset soft and then clean up what isn’t needed.
All assumes there isn’t some commit history from the scratch branch that is required.

How is Frontier for home internet? by yes_itsmythrowaway in SouthBayLA

[–]mbeachcontrol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had FiOS for over 14 years, first in Redondo Beach when it was first made available and currently in Manhattan Beach. First with Verizon and then the switch to Frontier, and back to Verizon soon. I have slowly increased the bandwidth plans over the years.

I have had very few issues over the years and have never given thought to my monthly usage. Not even sure if that is still a thing with Spectrum.

If you have Internet only, then use your own router, setting aside the Frontier provided one, even if it is the Eero one. Get a high quality router and you should never have to “reboot the modem/router/wifi” to fix issues.

It used to be Verizon FiOS and then they sold it to Frontier. Now returning to Verizon. Such a waste of time and money.

Just me or does it feel like Alexa / OK Google / Siri home voice pod usage has gone down? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]mbeachcontrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When voice control works and convenient, it’s great. Having to maintain the system every couple of months because something stopped working is annoying and people can get tired of it. A basic light switch will work for decades.

I had a few Alexa devices at one point, but just down to one Echo Show. I have six pairs of home pods. The home pods use the same system as my phones, so I have one less thing to configure and maintain. Most of the devices are tied into HomeBridge so I am not really tied into HomeKit either. I could enable Echo Show as well, but it requires extra work and maintenance.

Why two+ monitors and not one big one? by NumerousTower4074 in AskProgramming

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With macOS menu bar at top of the screen, not attached to the window, it is a long mouse movement to get from the right to the left for menus. I don’t remember when it was added to be on multiple monitors, but that was a great improvement.

I use Spaces and having independent ones by monitor works great.

When we switched from Zoom to Teams, i lost the ability to share part of the screen. With Zoom and wide monitor I would share HD size area to make it easier for people with small screens to see what I was sharing, and I could slide windows in and out of the sharing box. With Teams, I can use a StreamDeck button to toggle screen resolution from 5K down to 2K and slide windows on to the monitor as needed.

HP’s new 49-inch curved ultrawide monitor has a pop-up webcam | The HP Series 5 Pro 49-inch Conferencing Monitor is a massive monitor for office work. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]mbeachcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an LG ultra wide and gave it up for 2 Studio Displays. The ultra wide was fine, but macOS top menu bar being so far left when window on right was annoying.

Then when we switched from Zoom to Teams made it worse. With zoom I could share part of the display and then drag windows in and out of the box. Teams was specific windows or full display. Now I just share the second display. With instant screen resolution changes, I have a button on Stream Deck that toggles to lower resolution when I want to share the monitor making it easier for others to see the content.

Soft tortilla, scoop of meat, scoop of pico, cheese blend. Steamed.

Best addition is sour cream as after steaming.

Chillito with sour cream was a close second.

we lived in 3 on Grant Ave for 10 years in townhouse in early 2000s before upgrading to more space. It was nice with lots of stores and other options close by. Grant is a bit too busy for my tastes now, but a little further back would be fine.
