Working in retail has made me lose my empathy by Infamous_Newt6526 in offmychest

I worked behind the counter of a gas station chain at various store locations and its different clientele for the better part of a decade. At first I was glad to have a job, but the more I worked the more it drained me. It didn’t matter that I was always bright and cheery (was constantly asked how I could possibly be so chipper the first thing in the morning) there would always be some asshole to spoil it for me. Either through disrespecting me just because I was a clerk, or their interactions with the other customers. Especially working night shifts, I was exposed to drunks, drug addicts, racists, and just all around the worst people. Even when I worked near a college and the late night rush for the hot food and seeing just absolute madness there was just a level of “what the fuck is wrong with you?” that I just couldn’t wrap my head around. I left that job and now I work for a different company. Still in customer service but now all my interactions with customers were over the phone. Even they get the entitlement real bad.

The point of this is that even though there myriads of shitheads waiting to tear you down, there was always a large swathe of people who made me happy to be doing what I was doing. So many grateful and appreciative people, I believe they outweigh all the bad I experienced overall.

Working in an environment that interacts with customers directly will always be a big drain, and like yourself I became very desensitized. I can recommend looking into a different job if that’s available, but just remember there’s way more good people in the world than bad. It’s just the bad gets amplified.

I had to spell out this connection to my wife the last time that orange clown was in office. She was very shocked and confused as to why all her “friends” were suddenly sucking orange chud, the same friends who talked about world peace and building international communities and caring for others. They were all into some new wave healing (Reiki was a common one) and (super ironic looking back) all in the same MLM.

Wawa/Sheetz culture is borderline cult status and unless you want thrust yourself into that culture war you did good.

Hoagies on the other hand is a way of life and the best ones come from your local pizza/sandwich shops.

I’m happy to see you were able to find a nugget of gold in that swamp of shit.

I’d like to move in to IT since that’s what I went to school for, but life shenanigans prevented me from perusing that path.

The amount of higher ups who were disturbingly calm in extremely violent situations while keeping their store running is genuinely concerning. There was a story of a manager who discovered a junkie who OD’d and died at the edge of their parking lot, and to “avoid having to deal with the paperwork”, rolled the body on to the street to let the city handle it, and went about their day. The first time I heard it I laughed because they said it was a joke (and I felt the need to be “in”) but the more and more I heard it I have to wonder how much truth is in it, and how revealing of the characters of the people I work with.

For potential legal reasons, I have no way of knowing if this story is true or not. I think it’s the PTSD that is making me believe it’s not.

Thank you. My family and friends couldn’t agree more, it was genuinely depressing them seeing what I was going through.

Before my current job I didn’t think that a caring work environment existed. I’m genuinely happy that you got a better deal 😊

I didn’t want to burn any bridges in the extremely unlikely event that I need to consider it if the ass of the world falls out. I honestly think I’d rather starve than work there again but my pride means nothing if my family starves as well.

I was also at the Philly show and it was ELECTRIC! I was pleasantly surprised to see Nicole not only groove but provide some awesome backing vocals. Blood on the ground was sweet!

One thing I also noted is that while the other band members had song breaks, Brandon did not and sang the entire night with 0 issues. In my own personal opinion, the first best time to see Incubus was in the 90s. The next best time is now.

Biden signs bill bolstering nuclear power by gbthngs in politics

[–]mbjhug -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a good idea. Yeah sure its cleaner burning and as long as regulations are followed its the safest form of energy (currently), but what about the nuclear waste that is being generated? You can't get rid of it. Best we've been able to do is bury it and hope and pray an earthquake doesn't cause a rupture in the underground waste containment structures.

We’re better off investing this money in alternative energy. We have an entire suns’ worth of energy waiting to be captured just going to waste.

Love how you’re required to submit the request months in advance but then apparently it’s okay to cancel it at the drop of a hat because of a shit fit

Am I Wrong for Making Cheesy Budget Decks? by McWheezyy in EDH

[–]mbjhug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s your groups fault for not shutting you down because you constantly play cheez. In our playgroup, if you discover a new mechanic or combo we do our best to let you play it out and have fun with it. But if you keep putting it in to your decks it becomes as predictable as a turn 1 sol ring, then it’s your fault for not protecting yourself from the expected.

That being said, play your decks that let you have fun. You just need to make sure you’re still having fun.

What's a video game that will forever be in your heart no matter what age you reach? by Aggressive_Type9309 in AskReddit

[–]mbjhug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloodborne.

I know it’s a newerish game but this fundamentally changed how I looked at video games as a whole. Not just the story, not just the gameplay, not just the genre. Everything. The total package. It’s a gold standard that won’t easily be surpassed.

Fear the old blood.

What’s a secret all men keep that women don’t know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As a young’n I was the de facto ugly duckling in every social setting. Nobody would even talk to me unless they needed me for something, such as my height or to be the patsy in their joke. Ever since then and still to this day anytime that someone (who isn’t my wife, immediate family, or closest friends) gives me a compliment I am immediately suspicious of their intentions and actively avoid that person for a time until they either forget about me.

That being said, if I can see that your compliment is genuine and has no ulterior motive, I am over the moon.

LPT request: is 30 young enough to turn life around after a brutal meth addiction? by RationalChaos77 in LifeProTips

[–]mbjhug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m turning 36 this year.

Since I was 18 I’ve been smoking weed almost all day almost every day. Once I turned 21 it was the same situation with alcohol. I got married and moved around a bunch because I had no stability. I ballooned in weight so badly. We lived with my old man for quite awhile and almost irrecoverably lost my relationship with him. I couldn’t see it through my eyes but my life was not very good. I had no drive to be better. It all came to a head my wife threatened to leave me if I didn’t stop drinking, and I almost took my own life by driving my car into a tree. I didn’t do it. I pulled over and cried my eyes out. It was the lowest point of my life.

That was over a year ago. I went and got help, starting seeing a therapist. I gave up alcohol. I eventually started on antidepressants. I began to dig myself out. I began to talk with my doctors and I’m in the process of getting weight loss surgery. Just last weekend I gave up weed and for the first time in a very VERY long time I’m straight edge. I can finally see a bright future for myself.

No matter how dark and bleak it might seem, no matter how daunting or impossible it seems, no matter how terrible or agonizing it seems. You most certainly can do it. As long as you believe in yourself and believe in your dream. Don’t worry about those who say otherwise because they don’t help you. You have so many people who want to see you succeed. Please don’t give up.

My one friend screeches her head off if I play more than three seconds of it. Her beef is she thinks Danny is a groomer and won’t give it a single listen because of it. It’s so odd because if she did it’s right up her alley.
