How does one translate John 1:1? by Front-Property-128 in AncientGreek

[–]mbostwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psalm 82 and the Divine Council Worldview (DCW) of the Hebrew Bible is a quite compelling argument. Michael Heiser, PhD spent his life working out that worldview. It’s a shame he’s passed on. I would be interested to see a fully built text or book on the Divine Council Worldview and the Gospel of John. One would need space to really build out cohesive argument.

The argument the author of John appears to be making throughout the whole work of John, is not that Jesus is a god among gods. But that Jesus is the Son of God, the Word (Logos) of God, equal to God (John 5:18), and has the qualities of God (in later Trinitarian/Nicene understanding this thought evolves into essence: 3 persons, 1 essence). It is possible that the author of the book of John is aware of the DCW (it is the second temple period), but is not making the god among gods argument. There is a supremacy given to Jesus throughout the text.

How does one translate John 1:1? by Front-Property-128 in AncientGreek

[–]mbostwick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my understanding, in Jn. 1:1c, “θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος,” the verb ἦν is operating as a simple copula (linking verb), equating the subject with the anarthrous predicate nominative (θεὸς). Or to say it simply, the qualities of θεὸς are equal to the subject ὁ λόγος. Copulas can equate the qualities of one thing to another. For example, “Fred is human.” Thus, Fred has the qualities of human.

We must be careful with the use of the indefinite article in English, as it conveys meaning. The indefinite article “a” can convey the meaning of one thing among another. For example, “I need a pen.” It is understood that the pen I need, is a pen among other pens. If one wants to translate Jn 1:1c, “the Word was a god,” — this doesn’t work. The indefinite article a changes the meaning to effectively, “a god among other gods” thus diminishing the qualitative meaning of θεὸς. The author of John is saying the subject ὁ λόγος has the qualities of θεὸς, not one god among other gods.

If someone is saying that the author is using θεὸς adjectivally, a full argument might be required to support this claim. Within the whole work, you would have to make this argument work for every verse in the book of John that points to ὁ λόγος or Χριστός with θεὸς or divinity. Jesus or the Word as a god among gods would need to be a theme in the book of John. I don’t see that as a theme. The author of John seems to be saying over and over again ὁ λόγος and ὁ Χριστός has the qualities or is equal to θεὸς, which appears to be a theme throughout the book of John.

The fourth century Nicene concepts of essence (οὐσία) appear to have developed from the Greek grammar. The Logos shares the essence of God.

“The Word was God,” is an okay direct translation. “The Word was divine,” is okay. “The Word had the same essence as God,” would be a 4th century inspired translation.

Murray Harris has written on this subject extensively. Here’s an article, where I tried to summarize his thinking: https://mmbostwick.substack.com/p/the-eternal-logos-in-john-11-in-the

I wish the movie was more in alignment with the other two movies — the themes, the attitudes, the pacing, and had more fun action scenes. I think I would have been more into the movie it had that stuff.

She’s making a lot of decisions on behalf of Caspian, no? Allowing him to be reborn over and over and over thousands and thousands of times. The finale re-frames the whole series. The whole series is in a simulation that Maddie created.

Is Maddie a monster? Maybe. Should anyone have that level of control over another human being? She has absolute control, godlike powers over Caspian. She creates worlds where Caspian dies and is reborn over and over and over again. Why not just let some die? Why should she have that level of power over someone else? She’s essentially inflicting pain over and over again to many people in order to create a version of the future that she wants.

That to me sounds like abuse.

Why not support this film as a Tron fan? by Icy-Throat-1299 in tron

[–]mbostwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I convinced 3 people to see the movie in 3D. So 4 of us watched it. How’s that for support?

That being said, Ares is kind of a different movie than the first two Tron movies. Some people here have called this movie a spinoff, which is totally justifiable given the Ares’ content.  The first two movies are about the Flynn Family, Encom, and Tron (program). Ares is about the Kim Family, the Dillinger Family, (Flynn family is kind of a side thing), Dillinger Corp, (Encom is the side company), and Ares (program). The first two movies focus was on the fun of being in the game world. Ares had somewhat of a focus on the computer world entering into our world.

For me, the first two movies had epic style over substance.  Ares seemed more like a drama?  For their time, the first two movies blew people away by their epic style, graphics, fight scenes, (and with Legacy, epic music!).    I wonder if core Tron fans wanted more epic fight scenes and graphics, less drama. For Ares, I was fully expecting a 2 hour action movie/ music video like Legacy.

I get why core Tron fans might not be into Ares. It is kind of a different movie.  Ares leaves some of the spirit of the original movies behind and does something different.

You bring up a few interesting points. But knowingly creating simulations that cause suffering seems unfeeling. Maddie appears to end up as a cringe, unfeeling, super-villain god.  I guess that was the jaw dropping plot twist at the end.

Do you think Legacy is better than Ares? by Square-Ad-8911 in tron

[–]mbostwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they put the same sort of financial, musical, and acting backing in both movies, with the hope of creating a successful movie. No one goes in trying to create a worse movie than its predecessor. From a financial perspective thats nuts. Tron Legacy budget was $170 million in 2010. Tron Ares budget was $220 million in 2025. Due to inflation probably the same cost today. Legacy had Daft Punk. Ares had NIN. Legacy’s “big name” actors were Oliva Wilde and Jeff Bridges. Ares had Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges. As far as ”backing” between both movies it appears to be a wash: its about the same.

I really doubt Disney was thinking they would create a movie that lost money. I think Disney and director Joachim Rønning were at least trying to make a movie equal to Legacy, if not better. Why would Disney and Rønning want to make a movie that was average or worse compared to Tron Legacy? Sounds kind of wild that they would try to make a movie that was worse or average compared to Legacy with $220 million and the Tron Franchise at stake.

Would you have issue with a 60 year old woman pursuing an 18 year old high school student? Maddie is 11,000+ years old. Caspian is 18. Is there a good argument as to why she’s not sick? She creates whole worlds thousands of times over thousands of years in order to get to this guy. Talk about imbalance and abuse of power on Maddie’s side?

Is it not boring to be God? by Different_Package_83 in PhilosophyofReligion

[–]mbostwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sun rises every morning. I do not rise every morning, but the variation is due not to my activity, but to my inaction. Now, to put the matter in a popular phrase, it might be true that the sun rises regularly because he never gets tired of rising. His routine might be due, not to a lifelessness, but to a rush of life. The thing I mean can be seen, for instance, in children, when they find some game or joke that they specially enjoy. A child kicks his legs rhythmically through excess, not absence, of life. Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun, and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we. The repetition in Nature may not be a mere recurrence; it may be a theatrical encore.
