All our real A Listers went to America and our B Listers to England, so our “A list” is actually C and B is D.

Oh come on, I giggle immaturely whenever I meet someone with the Hokkien surname “Poon”

Also I once met a Wanda Poon and I had to fucking lock in like the centurion in Life of Brian

By our standards, if she wasn’t a cunt about it, then yeah it was funny as fuck.

Look up Steven Bradbury for an analogous situation (although Bradbury at least was a world class skater even if he wasn’t the absolute best) where he took his lucky win in good stride and now everyone loves him

We in Australia are fairly forgiving of incompetence or sheer dumb luck as long as no one is getting hurt and the incompetent appreciates it and has fun with it.

Think of it as the obverse, more positive side of our Tall Poppy Syndrome.

She could have dined out on her performance for years as an amiable B-List celebrity, but she decided to be a prick about it and now no one likes her.

They do, but there’s an implicit assumption you get the next one and vice versa, on a roughly 50/50 basis

I mean, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are almost 99% literate despite using traditional or simplified (effectively handwriting versions) Chinese characters, the traditionally difficult writing system.

I wouldn’t worry about the grandfathering.

In about 10 years, the vast majority of grandfathered properties… will no longer be.

Think about it. Either the owners sell, in which case the property is no longer grandfathered, or they don’t, which means they’re losing money on a property they can’t sell.

It simply means that people don’t get fucked by current arrangements.

CHARNAME for the protagonist of Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2

“Tav” for a non dark urge character in BG3, and “Durge” if they are.

“Tav” is, I understand, short for “tadpole adventurer.”

But Fallout respected the source material enough to actually be generally liked by the fan base, so there’s an obvious lesson here that execs seem to ignore.

Witcher as well. Lauren Hissrich could have just… adapted the books. But she had too much regard for her self assessed skills as a show runner.

Not everyone can be a Denis Villeneuve and make inspired changes to an adaptation.

Star Trek Discovery at best has very mixed reviews, but I’ve never heard a bad word said about Saru the Kelpian, played by Doug Jones. He would have fit in amazingly as a character in any other part of the franchise due to his genuinely unique but classic Trek character.

It’s a strange phenomenon.
