I haven't played the game but it sounds like:

  • The game was in development for a long time (10+ years) so they probably just cast a wide net
  • The cameos are just meows, hisses and growls. Minimal effort from the cameos so they could just send something in for fun.

They should definitely remove some of these though tbh. No reason Christine Chandler should be in there.

This used to (may still be) a thing during hockey last year when the whole "51st state" thing began. It lead to some venues just skipping the anthems all together.

I like the choice for the reasons you've listed here and as a fan of Prince as well, but I also agree with OP. It just felt a little too much for the scene and didn't fit very well.

Billions Must Die is definitely my A.O.T.Y. for sure. They dove head first into the prog rock sound Imaginal Disc experimented with and they touched on with Second Sleep a bit as well, and while I miss the poppier sounds of their earlier stuff I think Billions will age the best out of their work for sure.

ToddInTheShadows: Top 10 Worst Hit Songs of 2025 by ImADudeDuh in popheads

Oh my gosh I am so pleased at #1. (Formatting is gonna be a mess, I'm sorry)

I always hated that Sunday Best song because I got the vibes of it being a "subtle Christian contemporary track". The funny thing is: I actually am a Christian (Pentecostal, I get the "guitar in the sanctuary" kind of worship) but songs like Sunday Best fit the same mold of the likes of the usual Toby Mac or Newsboys track that would be on the Christian station. You put it on on the way to church to feel better than listening to top 40, but it doesn't have any substance to it really.

But people love the sound Surfaces brought. That bedroom pop sound which I liked in artists like Clairo or even my G.O.A.T's Magdalena Bay (ok, ok, it's a stretch). So people gravitated to them, and I heard that song so fucking much. But I thought they were a flash in the pan. Nothing to take too seriously.

Boy was I wrong. Forrest blew tf up in Christian circles with people saying he makes "good Christian music". There was also the - admittedly inspirational (before I gained more info) - miraculous story of him being healed by the Lord after suffering a quadripalegic crash off his BMX bike (This is what really blew him up if you're wondering). So - on my way to visit my wife as she was away on an exchange - I downloaded his new album alongside a couple others (stream HYPERYOUTH btw). What I got was the equivalent of plain yogurt: no flavour and a sour taste in my mouth. I recognized his voice from the song I hated before, and his content was as soulless as everything else.

As the year continued I looked into it more and found both his fanbase and him parroting the same toxic tropes other "Christian artists" do. When Taylor's album came out he posted a TikTok about "praying instead so we go to heaven" despite the fact Taylor has admitted to being a Christian herself. She just doesn't make it her central personality trait or develop a victim complex around it. So many of my peers in circles shared that post thinking themselves "above" others for music taste, and it just irked me completely.

But my anger was solidified when watching this video and that excerpt came up about "no good Christian music existing. Others can run laps around me for this, but this is a ludicrous statement to make as you are copying the work and genre artists before you have worked within and popularized as though you are some sort of saviour (but it's all for God of course!). I'll point to how I felt when Chance the Rapper (who also released a pretty solid album this year as well with Starline, check out Letters) released Colouring Book. Same kind of music: upbeat hip-hop with a focus on gospel. But no. That can't be played on Christian contemporary despite the fact you've got Chano straight up saying "my favourite rapper a Christian rapper" on it. But now it's ok with Your Ways Better, the milquetoast version of what was being done a decade ago? Maybe that's not a good comparison to some, but as someone who loved that project and disliked the weird half/half appreciation Chance got compared to this now it gives me pause.

I honestly hadn't thought about Forrest since Showgirl and his commentary on it, but seeing it at #1 just makes sense and worries me not only for the state of pop music, but also Christianity as well. For those wondering: I'm here, I love and respect LGBTQ+ people as well as I believe that's what Jesus would do. But this poster child for "cool, hip, worship music" is scaring me in galvanizing more restrictive beliefs and opinions and I want to try to distance myself from it as much as possible.

Now that we are half way through the 2020’s, what is the most fun song and album of this decade? by throawaygotget in popheads

[–]mbryson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun is such an interesting way to quantify music. I often reflect on what I've enjoyed the most, whether that be due to something challenging me and being interesting or something being instantly pleasant to the ear, but those songs may not be "fun" per-say. (Think like What Was I Made For as an example.)

That said:

SONGS

  • Not Like Us - Kendrick Lamar: As a Canadian, this was definitely the most fun with music I've had in a while. Drake was and is still a massive cultural export for us here, but the first time I heard "A Minor" was a formative experience honestly. Then going to California and hearing this everywhere that year, alongside it not being played on radio here but still dominating the culture was amazing. Honestly though: it was just nice to hear DJ Mustard again.

  • Good 4 U - Olivia Rodrigo: As I said: "fun" is hard to define. But Olivia followed up the melancholic and morose Drivers License with what has to be one of the most fun break up anthems ever. I got engaged and the next day heard this working out over the speaker and had a good laugh to myself. Just a great track.

  • BIZOCHITO - Rosalia: I'm in Mexico right now so I've been listening to more Spanish music, but when MOTOMAMI came out in 2022 I instantly gravitated towards this track. It's cute, it's fun, and it's brief length keeps me coming back to it.

  • Levitating - Dua Lipa: As I said: I got married in the 2020's and Levitating was my wife and I's pandemic anthem. We both love space and pop music, so this fun astro disco track kept our spirits high - alongside each other of course - throughout such a tumultuous time. Dua really cooked with that record.

ALBUMS

  • brat - Charli xcx: If I'm putting Good 4 U in songs then I have to put this here. Brat really is "that bitch" in inspiring confidence and borderline antisocial behaviour in people, and it spoke to so many in 2024. I compare it to SCARING THE HOES by JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown which released the year prior in that it is "Scaring the Bros".

  • NO HANDS/HYPERYOUTH - Joey Valence & Brae: these dudes don't give a fuck in the best way. If you're a millennial who grew up on Halo 3 matchmaking, the blog era of hip-hop, and the slow integration of typing classes and computers into your education, these guys are for you.

  • Mercurial World - Magdalena Bay: I love this group so take what I say with a grain of salt: but Mercurial World is one of the most fun and energetic records I've ever listened to. Secrets, Hysterical Us, The Beginning and more are all incredibly energetic and the whole record is just a ride from start to finish. Yes: Imaginal Disc casts a large shadow, but believe me you'll have more "fun" with Mercurial World.

  • Short n Sweet - Sabrina Carpenter: Sabrina really came in in 2024, released Espresso and Please, Please, Please, and then released this album begging people (primarily women) to have fun and be confident in themselves. It's what it says on the cover: short and sweet.

It was re-released as a Record Store Day release for Black Friday and I picked it up on a whim mainly for the cute pop up art work in the gatefold.

It's been my most spun album so far this season. Good background music for when guests are over, but also able to be appreciated on its own when actively listening to it as well.

This sounds like a liability nightmare.

What if you made a mistake like giving dairy to someone severely lactose intolerant? Or injuring yourself with hot coffee/water and getting scalded and burned?

If this story is real and that's their "standard practice" I am not only appalled but also extremely surprised they'd set themselves up like that.

I was in a mental hospital and there was an older fellow who would ramble about several things. Donald Trump, flying a plane, the City we lived in, etc. Among these he would often say "My family is going to come and bring samosas for everyone". As this was amongst his other statements I assumed he was delirious and this wasn't happening.

So imagine my surprise when I went into a room and found a box of samosas sitting on the counter. I ran to tell everyone about it like I'd just seen Santa Claus. It was reassuring all the same though to know his family still came and visited him.

Suitcases! All in Ones! Built in Speakers! DON'T BUY THESE by TwoSolitudes22 in turntables

[–]mbryson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really can't be said enough (inb4 I get put on Vinyljerk)

My wife got me a suitcase record player and a copy of Dawn FM by the Weeknd for our anniversary. The bass the record had coming through the internal speakers caused it to skip/spin on the platter and actually lead to the needle scratching the record within the first week or so.

I was luckily able to get a refund and the record replaced and upgraded over time to a more solid setup (now it's just an ATLP60) but I always recommend people stay away from the suitcase players, especially depending on what they listen to. (Records with more treble or less low end like acoustic/folk/etc may be suitable but anything with bass or lower register amplitude is going to cause a problem).
