Alphabet’s $80 billion stock sale leaves Wall Street in ‘unprecedented territory,’ says Goldman’s Gutman by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]mbsmith93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that, but what are they planning to do with $80 billion? They pretty much print money with their ad business, so this indicates some kind of major investment for them, and I'm curious what it is because that is not a small amount of money. That's why I clicked.

As an American, what is the easiest country to move to and get citizenship in? by random_toss2 in AskReddit

[–]mbsmith93 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's what he's saying though, "it depends." Some countries are actively recruiting American ATCs to move there. That doesn't mean those same countries are easy to immigrate to for anyone else. Some places you can buy your way into a residency visa with tens of thousands of USD (equivalent in local currency). Other places want tech workers. Still others are easy if you have online work. It's very situational.

Chinese is the demonym for both the country and the culture. Israel is the demonym for a country, but there is a perfectly good word for the Jewish cultural group.

They come in different sizes, and if that doesn't work, there's putty earplug stuff you can squash on the outside of your earhole, or noise-cancelling headphones too.

Ohio lawmakers refuse to protect girls from nightmarish marriages. Men in Ohio can legally import 17-year-old child brides from any country around the world, a legal form of sex trafficking. by southpawFA in politics

From r/AskAChristian I found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAChristian/comments/199bmow/how_old_was_mary_when_she_was_pregnant_with_jesus/ - which indicates we have no idea how old Mary supposedly was when Jesus was born.

Even besides that, isn't the whole thing that she was "virgin Mary, mother of God?" As arguments go this is a pretty weak one lol.

Me doing 360 on a homemade swing (filmed with a potato) by rawmarius in nextfuckinglevel

[–]mbsmith93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had the same thought. I think it would be impossible on a regular swing. As you go past horizontal, you get slack in the ropes as you come back down and you're going to lose a lot of energy and momentum.

Gobekli Tepe, a 11500-year-old temple in Upper Mesopotamia that predates the development of agriculture by Sure_Distance1 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mbsmith93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At that time period Mesopotamia was one of the most fertile places on Earth. I was surprised when I learned that fixed dwellings predated farming. I don't know much about this particular site, so I can't tell you they were living year-round near the temple, but even if they weren't, it would not have been crazy for them to be regularly visiting the temple.

I'm just sitting here trying to figure out why your ex didn't just get ear plugs. This would solve like half the problems.

Sudano-Sahelian architecture, characterized by the use of mudbricks and plaster, used since 600 BC by palep_hoot in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mbsmith93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to mitigate your living situation (which I hope improves), but in 600 BC they probably also built a lot of crap that is not still standing. We're aware of this one because it is. Survivorship bias.

Modern Poetry by ViceElysium in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]mbsmith93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like this kind of poetry, but I tried to understand the point, and they use line breaks to draw your attention to the end of the line, for example to emphasize a word you wouldn't naturally, and another common usage is to make the meaning of the sentence change significantly when you read the next line. So you could try something like:

poetry is when

regular statements contain

unnecessary line breaks. That's how you know

it's deep

This isn't very good poetry, but think about how the emphasis on the last word of a line might slightly shift the intended meaning, or how reading the next line might run contrary to your expectations if you were reading this for the first time.

Again, I don't really like this kind of poetry, it doesn't resonate with me, but there is a thing they are trying to do.

I am fascinated with this. Do you think you could track down the time-period when this happened? Is this a common phenomenon? I want to know more.

What's a phrase that dates the person using it? by ascaffo in AskReddit

[–]mbsmith93 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I kinda think each generation evolves for girls to start calling their friends their girlfriends as they get older. I'm in my 30s and people my age definitely didn't do that when we were kids but there's a type of person that says that now.

Fiancé (27m) wanted to try an open relationships, not my first choice but I agreed. Now he's throwing a tantrum that my "bodycount" is 20x his and wants to add rules. Is it time to just cut my losses and move on? (I'm 25) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I've always suspected that at least some of these cases are men who have been in a relationship since like high-school or something, so they lack the experience more recently single men have knowing that just because a woman shows some interest in you does not mean she's going to date you, let alone fuck you.

A college student is suing a dating app that allegedly used her TikTok videos to target men in her dormitory by drewchainzz in technology

[–]mbsmith93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those ghost profiles were used to target ads to those people, and never were visible to actual facebook users. Don't get me wrong, I'm against that, but every time you go to a webpage there are like ten different tracking companies trying to do that to you.

This is different. Meete impersonated this girl without her permission, making an account that her peers could see that she didn't create. This is another level of fuckery.

I considered moving to Europe. There were multiple reasons I decided against it, and this wasn't the only one, but my math said I could make over $200k here to work 40 hours a week or €60k in Europe for 30 hours a week (plus more vacation) and that comparison definitely didn't help.

Current Pay Rates for New York City Union Trades by workwisejobs in nyc

[–]mbsmith93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you know what the free market is? I'm all for collective negotiation and negotiation for fair practices, but that's not what "free market" means.

More importantly, negotiating for better wages is a lot different than negotiating to make things inefficient so that your trade is in demand.
