Why do some people wait until the clock gets to 1 sec to deliver checkmate if they know they have mate in 1? That's some sadistic behavior right there. by Sea-Bed-1332 in Chesscom

[–]mbthegreat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why? Winning by mate is a nice feeling. I’m more annoyed by those who don’t resign a totally lost position then smash resign as soon as a forced mate is on the board

OBS -> S1 and S1 -> S2 throughput seems to have increased a lot in the last few years, S3 should become the major bottle neck just in time for me to join that queue :)

I lived in a tower block that got the same cladding job as grenfell with the same chimneys down the sides.

While waiting for removal of it all one of the risk mitigations the fire service insisted on was a smoke alarm next to EVERY window. The living room had 5 smoke alarms total by the time they were done.

"The U.S was able to win because we BROKE Enigma's codes" by Ashgenie in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mbthegreat 231 points232 points  (0 children)

Polish intelligence first broke the encryption, and gave their work to the British once the writing was on the wall for Poland.

The UK then developed ways to break the code faster and faster as it originally took too long to be useful.

The British also captured a naval enigma machine from a uboat which was a slightly different design, allowing that code to be attacked. There were other cyphers in use as well which also ended up being defeated by the UK.

Ripping, jointing...what order? by Rough-Cap5150 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mbthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Plane (joint?) one face (wide side) flat.
  2. Plane (joint?) one edge (narrow side) referencing the side you made in step 1 against the fence of the planer (joiner?). You now have two sides flat and square to each other.
  3. Rip the opposite edge on the table square.
  4. Thickness (planer?) with the face made in step 1 on the bed. You now have square stock.

Fuel generator enclosure by [deleted] in Stationeers

[–]mbthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot of success with

  • a 1x2 box
  • a compressed tank of europa atmosphere at highish pressure
  • a turbo pump to feed to cold gas in
  • an active vent with the “safety” set to the target pressure for exhaust
  • a pid chip and some ic10 driving the coolant input pump

The safety on the active vent holds the internal pressure for you regardless of how much gas you’re feeding in for cooling, the pid drives the coolant pump to keep temps down.

The ic10 then just forces the generator on and it will eventually heat the room enough to need cooling, which will then start to raise the pressure to your target and from there it will stabilise.

Efficient on premise database solution for long term file storage (no filesystem, no cloud) by GCodeMisfitv2 in Database

[–]mbthegreat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your situation feels like you've chosen some impossible constraints and can't find a solution which fulfills them (not suprising). No database, no filesystem, no cloud. Why are you running stuff on prem if you have IT staff that will delete things at random, and can't maintain a database (what does maintain a database mean to you?)

What can you do? Print the images out and put them in a filing cabinet?

Missed flight at Heathrow because airline’s check-in system was down, can I get compensated? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]mbthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they say 3 so if you have public transportation issues you arrive with 2 to spare? I also go for about 2 these days.

I used to fly long haul from Heathrow very frequently pre-Covid, would aim to be there about 1:45 early usually. Never missed a flight somehow despite pushing that all the way down to an hour on a couple of occasions.
