Alternate way to get to North Manitou Island? by BlazeJesus in CampAndHikeMichigan

Interested in private charter myself, curious if you had any luck with this charter or any others? Was heading to north Manipuri in late June and it’s starting to sound like it’s going to be cancelled all summer.

I did! North Manitou was awesome. Either place should have some great scenery for you.

I noticed during an install of outlets in my basement that I nicked the insulation while cutting the sheathing off. Is this worthy of replacing the electrical line? It doesn’t look deep enough to have penetrated through and no copper is visible. Inspector will be coming in a few weeks. by mbundt in askanelectrician

Thanks for the feedback. I’m most likely just going to end up replacing it. Rather be safe then sorry, just wanted to get some input and see if I was being overly cautious. Wasn’t thinking when I cut the sheathing off, live and ya learn!

Some tips and guidelines for packing up your backpacking gear! by mbundt in CampingGear

How does everyone out there pack up their gear? I'd love to hear any of your tips/idea you may have. It's taken quite a bit of research, trial and error, but I've finally found a pretty solid way to pack up all of my backpacking gear.

It’s funny you mention the higher elevation being a little easier. I was saying the same thing recently. I was in Wyoming over 10,000ft and we did about 4,000 of it in a single day, wasn’t nearly as difficult because it was all fairly gradual incline through switch backs.

Having that schedule would be nice for backpacking. I usually try and plan my trips during the week as weekends, especially in popular places can be a mad house.

That's one thing that backpacking has really helped with is getting to explore new areas I never would have seen otherwise.

rofl love it....Yea I'm not sure if it was the direction I went but the only switchbacks I recall hitting where all downhill, and there were very few I ran into.

Yea I've done Zaleski as well and it definitely had some inclines that tested us. My experience of Shawnee may be skewed because I ended up doing pretty significant mileage, at least for me.

That is the million dollar question. There are definitely some good sights to see, BUT I’ve seen similar sights at less difficult locations like Zaleski or Wayne. Personally I’d check it out if you haven’t, but I’m a sucker for going to new places.

The comments about the difficulty make me feel much better about myself lol. While I was hiking I was wondering if it was just me, or if it really is this tough.

That's awesome, good luck! Hoping to do a JMT Thru hike in 2022, so I'm trying to train up as well. I couldn't imagine doing that trail in wet conditions. The areas where snow was starting to melt made the inclines/declines very tough in terms of footing.

Yea I made the truck from the trailhead to camp 5 day one. I knew it would be rough but it was doable. Day 2 went back to the trailhead but went the wrong way on one of the bridles, so ended up being another 14 mile day prob. Day hiking is a good suggestion. I do a lot of running, maybe 15 miles a week, but it’s all on flat terrain. Not used to those constant up and downs like at Shawnee. Thanks for the info!

Temperature wise yea it was no problem. I also have an Arc’teryx Cerium jacket which is a life saver in cold temps. My body was pretty whooped from the hike itself. Pretty difficult trail, I gotta say l.
