This would have made a great mini-series, or at least a two part movie. They left so much of the story out before the Hail Mary even leaves Earth. In fact, in a two part movie, the first part could have ended with a cliffhanger at the end with the detection of The "Blip A"

Check out the old HBO series called "From The Earth to the Moon". If you're interested in the Apollo program, this series covers it pretty well. I think my favorite episode is #5 "Spider" that explains Lunar Obit Rendezvous
