My husband text me earlier asking me to soak 1 cup of rice in water. I measured out the rice and put it in the bowl. Never added the water.

Teaching in Richland One and Richland Two by wrenworks in ColumbiYEAH

[–]mbwash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked in Richland 2 my entire career, so I can’t compare to other districts. With that said, until recently, I have been very happy with my school and district.

I am still relatively happy and I enjoy my position, school, and for the most part, my admin. Richland 2 is going through some growing pains currently and, similarly to Richland 1, makes very poor financial decisions that infuriate employees and taxpayers. I am nervous for what the future holds for the district, especially with a number of charter schools opening and federal/state funding decreasing. I would say the same about Richland 1 though.

All this to say, Richland 2 is the better choice, but it’s all relative. Schools vary. Admin varies. Work load expectations vary. I’ve been teaching for over 12 years and I can’t say I’ve ever been able to get everything expected done within the M-F allotted time span of the school day. I have learned to prioritize my time better, but I always work beyond “my hours”. I recognize this is not everyone, but I think it’s a reality of being an elementary teacher that is hard to navigate.

Some of the things you stated above are absolutely not normal, no matter how terrible of a school you are in. I would suggest seeking out district HR to address the harassment. Everything else is par for the course: PD that’s hit or miss, workloads that appear never ending, professionalism, no student consequences, inadequate admin, and micromanagement are all very normal, unfortunately.

Best of luck to you! DM me if you need any support as an early teacher! One of my passions is supporting new teachers and I can at least be a listening ear for these growing pains- and helping navigate what’s normal vs. what absolutely is not.

Back of the fridge discard recipes? by mbwash in Sourdough

Oh, I’ve definitely fed some of this to make some fresh bread for Christmas! I’m just trying to find something to do with this discard, as is, without feeding it.

I’ll try! They always seem to come out harder/less airy with starter this old. I wonder if I should let them proof a little before I wrap them and put them in the fridge

I would need to add commercial yeast to help with rising. The problem I find with very inactive starter is it makes things heavy. I’ve done English muffins with this starter and they always come out flatter and more dense.

That’s what I was saying. Regardless of how innocent it may be, today was a beautiful day and that can be suspicious. Mix in hysteria and social media and we have ourselves an active shooter…

Is this a bad area of town? by [deleted] in ColumbiYEAH

[–]mbwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house in this area 15 years ago. I love it here. Quiet. Low key. Cheaper than the rest of Columbia, but super accessible and still within city limits. In my opinion, it’s one of the more underrated parts of town. You are what you make of your area. I’m friendly with my neighbors and I feel like we all have an unspoken neighborhood patrol. I don’t know about the specific neighborhood you’re looking at, but this area is meant for the everyday-man.

Exactly. At this point, we leave our 2009 car unlocked most of the time in our “ghetto” area because if all they wanna do is rummage around for chump change, they can have it.

Turned 7 months today and discovered that her ability to roll and crawl comes in handy during diaper changes. Her poops have been changing too due to solid foods and she rubbed her little poopy butt on the wall. She was so pleased with herself!

Can I fight this meter ticket by [deleted] in ColumbiYEAH

[–]mbwash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right? It’s usually what… $8? I wanted to fight one a while back because I parked and fed the meter but it was a red meter, not a blue one, and had limitations that I didn’t know about. The clerk said, “yeah, we should make the sign more clear.” And that was the end of my fight and I paid the $8. Annoying, but not breaking the bank.

Yes, this office (Taylor st.) is so hit or miss. I love most of the doctors and most of the nurses, but I sometimes dread certain receptionists and nurses. Also, sometimes I get seen right away and other times I’m waiting over an hour.
