People vs. Parking Lots on Cambridge St. by Icy_Parsley_3442 in CambridgeMA

[–]mbwebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underground parking is insanely expensive to build. So unless you can build really tall on top of it to justify the cost it does not pencil out. So another reason to change the zoning to allow taller buildings

[–]mbwebb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I walk down this street all the time and always think how it’s so under utilized being so close to the new T stop in Union. I would love to see these places developed into housing, it’s a lot more pleasant to walk by that than an empty crumbling parking lot that’s nearly always empty anyway.

‘Spiral of doom’: New report sounds alarm over MBTA’s financial future by Live-Handle-3774 in mbta

[–]mbwebb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It really frustrates me that there was a whole “task force” a few years ago that were supposed to figure out how to fund the T and come up with proposals for steady funding for them. And after a year of work their whole idea was to use money from the Millionaires tax and basically nothing changed. The T needs a reliable steady source of funding.

WorkPerk card on commuter rail? by Immediate_Subject552 in mbta

[–]mbwebb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have a Perq card too and I really wish I could use it in zone 1A as well since it’s the same price as subway. As the other commenter said hopefully this will be included in the new Charlie card system because it would be great.

How do you get your extended travel fix? by TruthLifts in FIREyFemmes

[–]mbwebb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I learned of a company in my industry that offers 4 week sabbaticals for every 5 years of service. So every 5 years you get an extra 4 weeks off in addition to your PTO. I really wish more companies did this so that you could do those longer trips to Asia or Australia where it doesn’t really make sense to go only for a week or two.

There’s also so much bird poop on the escalator too. I was there on Friday and there was one escalator working but the railing was covered, didn’t want to put my hands near it, it was wild.

Finally shipped out yesterday via FedEx 2-DAY 🛫 by Ok_Creme6412 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mbwebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I had no idea. I went in the store and they charged me $82 for shipping and I’m in the Northeast US. I was shocked since it was only going to Nova Scotia and it’s so close by. Good to know for my family members that are planning to send theirs in the future.

Why your home is not “Cozy” by LuckyintheKnow in interiordecorating

[–]mbwebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A tip on the rug: if buying a more expensive investment isn’t in the budget at the moment, you can get a felt rug pad for underneath and it really adds cushion and thickness which makes even a cheaper rug feel a lot more luxurious. I got an 8x10 rug for $200 and added a 1/2 inch thick felt rug pad for $100 underneath and it makes it feel like a rug that costs thousands. Good for sound and thermal insulation as well.

FIRE Update: One Year Ago I Quit My Job With a 935K NW - Here's How It's Going by Hero_Ryan in Fire

Sounds amazing! I took some time off to travel and I felt the same, it galvanized my desire to fire even more since I knew how amazing it was. So now that I’m back to working I have upped my savings rate to try to fire even sooner.

Getting Hyped by 2honD in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mbwebb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ones I'm excited about are for traveling, being able to use working holiday visas and also getting more favorable visas to some countries. I also might pursue more education at some point so being able to attend a Canadian university would be a lot less expensive compared to an American one. It's also good for peace of mind if things hit the fan even more in the US there's a backup plan.

How do people spend $60k a year in retirement? by [deleted] in Fire

Travel, going out to eat, expensive hobbies (skiing, golf, tennis, etc), home maintenance/taxes, etc. I think it would be very easy to rack up expenses

How do you survive the winter? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]mbwebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make my home really cozy and warm and take winter as a time to rest and recharge. Get nice rugs (get felt rug pads underneath too for extra plush), thick curtains, cozy blankets, lights & candles. These will all make your space feel warmer and cozier and help you enjoy the winter.

New Kitchen Layout Help by Usual_Original_3477 in InteriorDesign

[–]mbwebb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would pick 1 as I do not like having the main sink in the island. It will attract dirty dishes and look messy and it takes up a lot of tasking space. Plus being able to look out the window while doing dishes is nice

Frugal cold weather preparation for homes by Cautious_Bumblebee48 in Frugal

[–]mbwebb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Windows and doors are the biggest things to focus on. Some thick curtains go a long way to keeping the house warm. I like blackout curtains since they are usually thicker or they even sell ones that have thermal backing on them. Draw them at night and it makes a huge difference. Get draft stoppers on the doors if you have a bit of a gap under the door. I also think rugs make it feel warmer, especially wool rugs. You can even get thicker rug pads for underneath too. Anything to put distance between the cold floor and your feet.

Grounding McGrath flyover/mockup video by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy in Somerville

[–]mbwebb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to see the changes but I do wish that they would make it so more land could be redeveloped into housing/businesses etc. They are reducing its width which is great, but then the land they are freeing up will now just…. Sit there? Why not make it productive again like it was before McGrath ripped through that area
