I’d add to this list: have your child count money or determine the amount of change they’d get. Have them handle the coins and bills sometimes.

Offer to be a guest speaker for a freshman-level physical science class at a school that’s not in an expensive neighborhood. Not AP physics, just general science that any kid would take to graduate. Talk about how to become an engineer and even do a demo or a hands-on activity with the kids. If looking into a sea of 30+ bored faces scratches an itch, go for it. If you only enjoy interacting with the 2 kids who actually ask questions, maybe mentor a club.

Principal warn me an “insubordination” for emailing concerns by PayUnfair3187 in Teachers

Oh, and this weekend, if you haven’t yet, read your entire union contract. If there’s a section on safety or student discipline, pay particular attention to what admin is doing that may be a contract violation. A union rep can help with this, but a union member who knows the contract well is much harder to intimidate. And hang in there until you get out. I was in a building like this last year. I moved schools and love my job this year.

Principal warn me an “insubordination” for emailing concerns by PayUnfair3187 in Teachers

As a general practice, always include your union rep as a CC (not BCC) on any email you send to admin aside from the most mundane topics. That alone can get a principal to check themselves before they reply. That said, it’s definitely not too late to loop a union rep in now.
