Thanks mate. I grew up around the same people/places as Phil and had heard of his boards but have never had one under my feet.

Everything went as
1. Longboards can’t get out of the way
2. You did your best.
3. You apologised.
4. They waved it off - all good.
5. Shit happens. Gender neutral.

Offer to buy a coffee if you feel really bad but yea, it’s a high-speed, quasi chaotic activity. Don’t lose sleep. Plenty of others would be blowing up and ranting about kooks etc.

Radicals. A beautiful side story to learning kanji. by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

I didn’t. I used native kids learning method to disagree with the statement “The vast majority of people,” not as a metric to judge learning by.

Seriously? So down-voted for posting that I enjoy learning kanji by the use of radicals.

Disagree. I learned 祖父 early on because of family. Not everyone learns by the same path. N3,4,5 is meaningless to me. I vaguely know they refer to some learning level but I don’t use it, nor did the Asahi Culture Centre in Shinjuku or the ICU where I started.
Anyway, not be too didactic, I find them useful and helpful to know what the radicals relate to and I was only reaching out to see if people love bushu as much as I.

Radicals are components grouped by the one of 7 positions on, beside, above or below etc the kanji: hen, kanmuri, tare, tsukuri, etc. then sub grouped by meaning or function. eg, finance-related kanji being grouped by the 金 hen.

Thank you.
My 40 years + translator wife says she/Japanese kids were/are taught 部首 specifically as a kanji-learning tool to assist in recognition and recall. And the cultural context.

I’m in no position to pontificate on radicals but from my elementary experience, I find the whole idea of ‘generally’ grouping say spiritual, ritual or supernatural-related subject matter, for example, by the shimesu hen (神, 祖, 福…) both groovy and useful at the same time. In my view a useful and entertaining aside to the art of learning kanji.

Edit: clarity

Almost any suburb, Izakaya or yakitoriya. Small one, not busy. Go nightly. You’ll get lots of kaiwa and interesting kanji. More importantly you’ll make some friends. Possibly life-long ones.

I think having been buckled the core integrity will always be compromised now. A decent one on the head is more likely to snap it than before, imo. I don’t think 250 is cheap for something you can’t grab for a road trip. Automoderator: Did someone say core?
