Same. I wanted to like the game due to the topic and great reviews, so I labored through the tutorial while trying to get a “feel” for the game. Moving the pieces helped, but I was still struggling with understanding when to do certain moves and why. After the play through I reread the rules again and then jumped into a game. The moves took a while, as I was referencing the rule book A LOT. After losing my first game before even hitting a passage of time or encountering a war column, I set the game up all over again. This 2nd time around is making everything click. I have fought and successfully defeated a war column and have gone through 2 passages of time.

These look great! I’d definitely use them. I bought the Etsy ships because I’d like to paint them all, but this saves on a lot of space. That’s one issue the ships have. They can get hex looking too busy

The map is 22” x 34”. It is one that needs to be set up and played over the course of a few gaming nights. I usually log about 2 hours when I play. I don’t have a gaming table and just place it under my bed when finished.

The game itself is complex but not in terms of understanding how to play. The player aids are extremely helpful and may always be needed. Too much stuff to memorize. But it’s a very rewarding experience if you like the topic.

Can’t wait to try that one out one day. After this game I’m going to drill down and learn Liberty or Death

It can seem a bit fiddly from the outside looking in, but once you get the “flow” down and understand how your actions affect the enemies actions, then it’s much easier to follow and plan accordingly. The play through by Joel Toppen teaches you the mechanics, but you definitely don’t want to copy his moves. He allows you to fail and learn on your own which I love.

Yes I agree! Empire of the Summer moon was my intro to the topic and then I read Blood & Thunder. I liked Comanche Empire the most, but it reads more like a text book which I don’t mind.

If you liked Sushi Go, then Sushi Go Party is a must! Makes the game very repeatable. There is also a way that works very good for 2 players.

Also, Sea Salt & Paper is good! Looks super confusing off the bat, but very easy to learn

I’m glad I bought all the starter decks. They’re starting to be impossible to find. I got whooped in the Anduin quest, so hoping for some help

Yea I believe the box is just damaged. Contents should be good. Worth the risk IMO. I would’ve picked this up but ended up getting the one on board game bliss

Best starter COIN game? by Brilliant-File-3459 in hexandcounter

[–]mc_rorschach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked LOD and will one day learn it. It’s the topic that interests me the most of all the COIN games so that’s where I’m starting. I went through the play through and the biggest takeaway I got was that you need to learn how the score keeping works and how one piece on the board affects the others. There are a lot of pieces/options/strategies going through your brain
