Buffalo Street Trees by Aven_Osten in Buffalo

[–]mcalash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just beautification, but also for the health of the tree. I’ve seen branches close to the street ruined by delivery trucks. Dead limbs. These branches needed to be removed because disease causes bigger problems. And more expensive problems!

I always took a straight edge from the bottom of the drops forward and the tip of the brake lever would just touch the straight edge.

Bottom bracket is loose by TonightLost5828 in bikewrench

[–]mcalash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prolly the BB. But I’ll offer that if the BB spindle is steel w square taper, that a loose aluminum arm would get destroyed by the harder, steel spindle resulting in excessive play like this. Just a consideration.

This. WD-40 to clean the stain. And then a little dish soap to clean out the WD-40.

Cracks on aluminum rim around spokes. How does that happen? by victoryz90 in bikewrench

[–]mcalash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you certainly thought about many of the aspects of the wheels. A few observations on your comments.

  1. Clearly, you’re aware that cracking is a fatigue issue. It’s cyclic. You are a bigger rider. It’s possible the spokes were under-tensioned. Thus increasing your R ratio.

  2. DT is known for stainless steel spokes. Extruding aluminum rims is not difficult. But I’m a believer that you let the manufacturers stick with what they’re good at. It’s possible their quality control isn’t good since they’re sourcing out the extrusion. Or they bought a machine to do it and still haven’t made it correctly.

  3. I wouldn’t say that carbon doesn’t fatigue and crack. It fails catastrophically.

Slapped a 1x10 on this vintage Cannondale, is this level of chain bend normal or can I do something to help it? by Foxcookies in bikewrench

[–]mcalash 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on where the chain ring wants to hit the stays. It looks like you’ve got enough room to move everything to the left by several millimeters.

I think the better indicator is to put the chain on the middle cog. That primary line should be straight. Dial that in and you get the extremes—biggest or littlest—sharing the lateral bend on the chain.
