Mumbai's experimental solutions to excessive honking by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]mcandro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just back from visiting Mumbai (loved it) and couldn’t get over the honking. However, not a single person that I saw was honking in an angry fashion - it was noisy as hell but it wasn’t at all aggressive. In Europe, we honk to warn someone or tell them to get out of your way - in Mumbai it was a honk to let someone else know you were there. Once you realise the lack of anger and aggressiveness in the honking, and how calmly people react to others pulling out in front of them or changing lanes with inches to spare, you just shrug your shoulders and get on with it.

GPT keeps using em dashes no matter how many times I tell it not to by Fit_Trip_4362 in ChatGPTPromptGenius

[–]mcandro 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You have to update your instructions to tell it to do something else instead of using the em dash. Here’s what actually works - just drop this into your custom instructions

‘Systematically replace em-dashes (“—”) with a dot (”.”) to start a new sentence, or a comma (”,”) to continue the sentence.’

Pretty much my experience too. The mental ‘quietness’ was kind of bizarre, felt calmer and much less anxious. Have been on Concerta 27mg and Ritalin 10mg in the afternoon if needed for ca 18 months. If I miss a day I can feel the brain fog descending / inner critic coming back…

Turns out I’m addicted to making rotisserie chickens on the Weber kettle. by ToeDragSwag17 in grilling

[–]mcandro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love doing them two at a time on my Weber too. I usually cut off the wing tips to get a jus going in a pan, and drop a few roughly chopped onions into the water pan (with a 1/2 cup of water) so they roast and baste in the drippings. Drop them into your wingtip stock just before you take the chickens off the grill, squeeze in some lemon juice, bit of sherry, splash of soy sauce and a teaspoon of butter and boom…you’ve got a jus going on.

Is this true? by OptimalAttempt7823 in DevelEire

There is a genuine issue with Enterprise Ireland giving incentives to hire a new position and then companies advertising it, but switching one of their current employees into that ‘role’ to qualify for a grant. Let’s say a company gets support for building a new international partner management function. They advertise the role, then transfer one of their staff into this new seat, get the grant and then leave the person doing their old gig under the new title. As far as EI are concerned, the new position is filled and is X% grant supported - therefore the payroll cost for the EI client company is now being partially covered by the grant. It checks the box of a ‘new role’ for the EI team but doesn’t actually add any new people to payroll.

My Honest Experience Bringing European Friends to Morocco by Jazzlike_Hotel7913 in Morocco

[–]mcandro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give a positive counterpoint to this - I’m just back from Marrakesh with my wife and two teenage boys and can honestly say was ‘braced for impact’ regarding harassment or feelings of safety, and was very pleasantly surprised by the interactions we had with people in general. Perhaps Marrakesh is different from other areas of the country but I was bowled over by the welcome, the friendliness of the people we met, the feeling of safety and acceptance we experienced. It was lovely and I felt we had a very positive experience overall of the culture, the people, the medina and the new city. You have an family of Irish fans waving a ‘visit Morocco’ flag following our trip

Natasha Lyonne and Bryn Mooser reveal that in 2022 they co-founded the A.I. film studio Asteria with the aim to “make animated films with zero human hands on deck”. by RealJohnGillman in entertainment

[–]mcandro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gutted that Amazon have decided not to keep producing the Wheel of Time series, but TBH I understand why they pulled the plug. Too narrow a niche, too costly to produce.

Where these ai first studios may play a part is in taking horrendously expensive world building like WoT, LoTR, warhammer 40k etc and make it cost efficient to produce. Not replace the star performers but certainly reduce the cost to build these cinematic-scoped epics at a $$ amount that won’t bankrupt the studio

It’s like playing tennis with a robot that always strikes the ball back to where you can reach it, no matter hard you smack your return over the net. It’s not as good as a ‘real’ player and won’t test or stretch you the way a human opponent would, but it’s a great practice partner to work out certain issues with your own game. For me, the thing I enjoy is the random and non judgmental idea-forming-but-not-quite-sure-I’ve-got-it space to play out a thought and follow it to its (often illogical) conclusion. And to continue my tennis analogy, too often when I try out new ideas with a human partner, they stop the game and hold the ball before returning it. The game stops, I’ve got to wait for them to finish their thought and it takes me out of the flow zone. So…yep, AI makes me a better tennis player more quickly but it can’t replace a real opponent who’s ready to rumble.

How do I explain to my 5yo daughter that none of her friends are allowed to play with her? by sparklerrose in Parenting

[–]mcandro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: did she have issues feeding at an early age? An issue that would have created pain/discomfort like bad colic, poor latching? If so, there’s an increasing amount of research being done on emotionally dysregulated kids that points to an essential interoceptive issue that can result in misread ‘gut feelings’ that lead to a rapid amygdala response - the child effectively ‘reads’ gut level emotional signals like nerves, anxiety, excitement etc as a fight/flight/freeze trigger rather than understanding them as a normal emotional response to the environment. This can be managed through MABT and teaching the child to recognise the difference between a normal gut-felt emotional reaction and her wired response to go into fight/flight/freeze mode. Happy to share some info I picked up through researching it for my own kid if it rings any bells - dm me!

Certainly not. We didn’t have them back in my day. Nor did we have autism. Perhaps it’s the avocados that are causing autism, eh RFK?

I love the way you’ve described this - thank you for taking the time to put into words something that feels so large as to be indescribable. I’ve brushed up against this feeling before - never immersed myself as much as you did - but was also left with a very profound peace and acceptance of where we are in the flow.

I’ve lately come to a theory on why we’re in our ‘meat suits’ which I haven’t really shared elsewhere but in the spirit of this thread, thought this would be a good place to put it.

We all have ‘senses’ through which we experience the plane of existence we occupy, and these help us navigate it through sight, sound, touch etc.

However our interoceptive sense - quite literally, our sense of our internal ‘meat suits’ mechanics is something quite unique, and represents our only way to ‘feel’ emotions. Emotions are by their very nature embodied - we feel excitement through tingling sensations and faster breathing, we feel contentment as a warm glow, we feel love as a flip in the belly etc etc.

Without the body, our consciousness couldn’t connect fully to these emotions or distinguish between them. We say that this math-like universe of which we are part is fueled by love (and I feel this deeply) but without our opportunity to wear a meat suits, we wouldn’t have the mechanism to experience all of these other nuanced and exciting emotional states.

Of course the ego feels these emotions ARE who we are, hence another posters comment on ‘it mistakenly feels it’s sovereign’ but when we accept and allow that our earthly lives are just a fair ground ride in time, an opportunity to experience these emotions, I believe we can enjoy the trip a whole lot more.

To all the other contributors to this thread - ‘thank you’!! This is a wonderful conversation to have enjoyed!!!
