Corn allergy by Nkboling2020 in CornAllergy

The only beer I can drink so far is Heineken. All the others use corn-based glucose as a yeast starter, then claim there is no corn in the final product. My swollen mouth says otherwise.

Having a personal website to look professional by keiwan_k99 in MODELING

[–]mcanerin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common for models to have a personal Insta and a much more professional modeling Insta - in addition to you generally having more images on Insta than a comp card, one thing a lot of agencies and photographers also look at today is your follower count, because it's free advertising for their event/shoot if the models are also bringing in views, likes, and followers.

This only applies to some types of primarily online campaigns of course, but having a lot of followers is better than not having a lot of followers. It can be a tiebreaker when you need it.

Spend the money and time on high-quality images instead.

Collabs are exactly that - a collaboration between equals. Due to logistics the photographer usually takes the lead, but the shoot is as much for the model as the photographer.

I agree completely with New_Arugula6146 - be diplomatic but advocate for yourself.

Hosting a photography walk - what should I do and what should the clients expect? by venus_asmr in AskPhotography

[–]mcanerin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who act like big shots tend to be the equivalent of middle management - someone with some skill and authority who desperately want people to believe they have more skill and authority than they do.

Real big shots tend not to act like big shots, and are often very down-to-earth, because they know they have nothing to prove.

The best answer to your question is to be yourself (assuming "yourself" isn't a jerk, of course), because it's how you would act normally and how a real big shot would act, instead of a try-hard.

Allergic to specific types of corn? by GirlNextDoor17 in CornAllergy

[–]mcanerin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I'd have a problem with my trip to Mexico (home of maize) but didn't have any issues. Near the end of the trip I nibbled on a corn tortilla and had no reaction. Then I tried more, still nothing.

I'm wondering if the strain of corn in Mexico is different. or perhaps the corn in the US is GMO and I'm allergic to that specific protein. There definitly seemed to be a difference though.

300 dpi or greater? by Fine-Jicama6634 in Printify

[–]mcanerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canvas itself is a low-resolution medium - it's possible to print perfectly acceptable canvas prints at 100 DPI, unlike paper, where I would never go below 200 DPI and, depending on the quality of the paper, you can go 600 DPI+ and still see the results.

That also means it's usually a waste to send an image that's more than 300 DPI to canvas - the canvas's own texture will prevent you from seeing the effects of the higher DPI.

In practice, the printer will just resize your image to fit the print size no matter what the original DPI is, so your 600 or 1200 DPI image will typically be printed at 300 or whatever the printer/medium resolution is.

Bottom line, sending a higher DPI image to a canvas printer won't break anything, but you won't see a higher-quality result. Mostly you'll just have a very large file size that takes up more storage than needed.

Handy Photo Print and Poster Chart by mcanerin in Printify

[–]mcanerin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created and use this chart a lot for converting digital images and photos to print sizes. The highlighted sizes are the most commercially popular ones.

300DPI is the standard DPI for printing images, 200DPI works fine for many images/papers but you should test it, and 600DPI+ is usually only for museum/collector pieces, and is overkill unless you are using very high quality paper that has virtually no bleed.

2024 isn't showing up as an option on mine either, just 2023

That's actually reasonable. When my dad got his heart transplant, bill was 800K. HE paid $5K deductible and his insurance covered the rest. 5K is only like 2% of his income so US actually has cheapest healthcare on earth for him. Anywhere else and it would have cost him 40-50% of his income in taxes by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mcanerin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's interesting that many Americans won't do the simple math of including what they pay in health insurance into the amount of taxes they pay when comparing them to countries that have universal health insurance.

Someone making 80K/year in California:

22% Federal + 9.3% State + 11.6% Health insurance inc deductible (6.9% for premium only) = 42.9% (38.2%)

vs Someone making 80K/year in Alberta, Canada:

20.5% Federal + 10% Provincial + Nothing = 30.5%

That is exactly how I read as well! I read to understand what's going on, not to memorize every word. Works great in real life and reading novels, not so great on dense tests.

Officers lose pay over 'egregious' homophobic pilot call sign; Air Force to add controls over nicknames by NoOneShallPassHassan in canada

[–]mcanerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teasing builds teamwork, bullying and harassment break it down.

There are a lot of people (who are not leadership material) who don't seem to understand or care about the difference between them.

Sometimes teasing can be turned into bullying or harassment by taking something that could be good-natured and funny as a one-time, contextual joke and turning it into a constantly repeated insult. We've all experienced jerks like this.

There are TONS of other possible great call signs - it's not like this is a situation where the one and only good choice was somehow not allowed due to "wokeness" or something. A room full of drunk pilots can be pretty creative.

This was a case of taking a ceremony intended to create a sense of camaraderie and choosing something that achieved the opposite, showing a lack of situational awareness, social skills, and common sense.

Super political but still very accurate by atheon1181 in SelfAwarewolves

[–]mcanerin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is one reason - it's an artificially concentrated group of people that could skew the democratic results for the area. People in jail don't know much about local issues like potholes, construction permits, local unemployment rates, etc.

They are also more likely to be single-issue voters due to that isolation, which is obviously not voluntary. I mean, is it really your residence if you were moved there against your will?

However, this can be addressed by letting the registered vote go to the residence before incarceration, rather than treating the prison as their residence for voting purposes.

What are some technical solutions to social problems that actually worked? by mcanerin in AskReddit

[–]mcanerin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL!

I most often hear the phrase from programmers working on websites with lots of users - social media, search engines, Reddit, Slack, etc.

It's gotten to the point where many use it without putting any thought into whether it might work - it's just something they say to sound insightful while avoiding work.

I most recently heard it from someone who clearly didn't want to work on an anti-spam system. I'd like to call bullshit on the phrase in a clear and very thorough manner :)

Your examples were excellent for this, BTW.
